Discover Wald: chapel, history and bus routes
Accommodation in Wald
When planning a trip to Wald, two clear themes can serve as a guide: the history of the Lordship of Wald and the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua. Bus routes 741 and 862 are relevant for getting there, with route 862 operating seasonally. There are also other cultural and hiking activities in the wider destination of Bad Münstereifel.
Local history and chapels
Historically, Wald belonged to the Lordship of Wald. The lordship, covering around 350 hectares, belonged to the Barons and later Counts of Gymnich zu Vischel until 1794. This gives a specific time frame for the area’s history. Those interested in religious heritage will find another point of interest in the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua in Wald. It was built in the 18th century as a simple quarry-stone structure. Its feast day is June 13; in the chapel, St. Anthony of Padua is especially invoked to help find misplaced or lost items. The chapel’s design, feast day and religious tradition offer different insights into its history.
There are two other religious points of interest nearby. The Roman Catholic pilgrimage chapel of St. Michael on Michelsberg is designated as a historic monument and was built around 1500. Decke Tönnes Wald Chapel is dedicated to St. Anthony of Egypt. The references to Anthony refer to different saints: in Wald, it is Anthony of Padua, while Decke Tönnes is dedicated to Anthony of Egypt. With its approximate construction date and designation as a historic monument, St. Michael’s Chapel offers a different perspective.

For the season from April 1 to November 1, 2026, the leisure bus on route 862 runs daily between the Middle Ahr and Bad Münstereifel; Wald is one of its stops.
