Discover Wennemen: Cycle Routes, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Wennemen
Wennemen is a hub for cyclists: the town has a direct connection to the SauerlandRadring and is located right on the RuhrtalRadweg. This route passes through the Meschede municipal area via Wehrstapel, Meschede, Wennemen and Freienohl, then continues through Arnsberg to Duisburg. Both details are useful for planning your route, but they do not mean the same thing: one describes the direct connection, while the other describes the RuhrtalRadweg’s route through the towns listed.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
Hiking destinations around Wennemen include Stimm Stamm, Enster Knick and Wennemer Höhe. Wennemen is also part of the third stage of the Ruhrhöhenweg between Meschede and Arnsberg. There is an established network of hiking trails in some areas around the town, and designated mountain-bike routes add to the touring options. The named hiking destinations are individual places around Wennemen, while the stage information places the town on a route between Meschede and Arnsberg.
Nature in the Ruhr Valley
The “Ruhrtal mit Wennemündung” nature reserve protects the distinctive landscape of the “Wennemer Ruhrtalweite.” It is considered the largest valley lowland in the planning area. Conservation objectives include the legal implementation of the FFH site notifications DE 4614-303 “Ruhr” and DE 4715-301 “Wenne.”
The wetland biotope complex near Meschede-Wennemen is an elongated former oxbow in the Ruhr floodplain, close to the BAB 46 valley bridge. The Ruhr floodplain and the valley bridge are two specific reference points for locating this biotope.

Local History and Meschede
Wennemen’s historic town centre is around the church and Gendarmenmarkt. St. Nicholas Parish Church in Wennemen dates from 1929; its patronal feast day is 6 December. The memorial cross on Kehling was erected in 1964 by members of the St. Nicholas Rifle Brotherhood to commemorate those killed in both world wars. A local report from 2007 described the memorial cross as a landmark visible from far across Wennemen and noted that it was illuminated on all major feast days and at the turn of the year.
In the wider destination of Meschede, the Meschede Heights Hiking Trail, marked with an “M,” is a circular route through the Meschede municipal area. It runs from Erflinghausen via Grevenstein and Freienohl to Eversberg and offers views across the region. In Meschede, the Henne Boulevard connects the lake and the town over a distance of two kilometres. It passes Hennepark and the open Henne at Winziger Platz, and is accessible, with a fitness trail. Meschede is also home to the family-friendly Sinnepfad above Hennesee, a circular trail with ten interactive stations and views of the lake.
