Attendorn: Cave, Biggesee and City History
Accommodation in Attendorn
Attendorn brings together the Atta Cave, Lake Bigge and a historic town center with hiking trails and viewpoints. To help plan your trip, start with a simple question: should your stay focus mainly on a cave tour, a hike by Lake Bigge or the town’s historic sites? Attendorn is located in the Biggesee-Listersee Nature Experience Area. Its different sites and trails offer concrete starting points for a stay focused on nature or culture.
Atta Cave and views of Lake Bigge
During the tour of the Atta Cave, groups enter the realm of Princess Atta through an 80-meter-long tunnel. The temperature in the cave remains a constant 9°C in both summer and winter. The tour and the cave’s climate are two specific features of the visit that remain the same regardless of the season.
The BiggeBlick observation platform offers a different perspective: it is located 90 meters above Lake Bigge. From there, you can enjoy views of Lake Bigge, Gilberg Island and the ruins of Waldenburg Castle. The forest path from the large parking area to BiggeBlick is about 800 meters long and has inclines that may be difficult for people with mobility impairments to navigate. As trail conditions can change, check their current state before your visit.
Hiking trails and historic sites
A popular starting point for the Bigge-Lister Trail is at Waldenburger Bucht in Attendorn. The trail is 46 kilometers long and can be hiked in its entirety over two days. From its starting point at Waldenburger Bucht, it passes the historic Waldenburg Chapel and continues to the ruins of Waldenburg Castle. There, you can enjoy your first beautiful view of Lake Bigge. Check the signage and trail conditions on site.
This makes the Bigge-Lister Trail a good option for a multi-day hike. The historic city walk offers a different way to explore the town’s history, leading to significant sites that bear witness to Attendorn’s more than 800-year history. You can plan your own route or use the suggested route on Komoot.
Explore the town’s history at your own pace
At the stops along the historic city walk, QR codes provide additional information, historic images and fascinating background. The Cologne Gate is another point of interest: it was once one of the four entrances to the medieval Hanseatic town of Attendorn. The walk thus connects present-day navigation around town with information about its former role as a Hanseatic town.
The South Sauerland Museum, formerly the Local History Museum of the District, is located at the market square in Attendorn’s pedestrian zone, opposite the parish church. If you plan a visit, check the visitor information separately. Schnellenberg Castle also tells the story of Attendorn: this distinctive historic hilltop castle stands above the town and has a history spanning more than 800 years. The museum, city walk, Cologne Gate and castle each offer a different perspective—from a site within the town to a historic building above Attendorn.
