Silberg: Cultural History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Silberg
Silberg brings together cultural attractions and marked hiking routes. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural history at the Schrabben Hof and trails through the surrounding nature reserves. The varied themes range from exhibitions and live performances to tours that explore natural and cultural history.
Cultural History in Silberg
The Schrabben Hof complex, most of which is a listed monument, was established as a venue for social and cultural gatherings from 2003 onwards; it has been protected as a historic monument since 2002. The museum at the Schrabben Hof presents an exhibition on agriculture, Hauberg woodland management, horse-drawn transport and traditional crafts. In the wider destination of Kirchhundem, the museum also tells the story of life in a Sauerland village and Silberg’s mining history across approximately 250 m². It also provides information about the region’s nature reserves and displays fossils and minerals illustrating the history of the Earth.
The listed bakehouse from the 18th century stands at Hof Schrabben. Another cultural venue is the small arts stage at the local history museum in Silberg, which has become a centre for theatre, music, literature and the visual arts. Since 2021, Silberg Church has also served as a cultural church alongside its liturgical function; exhibitions, readings and concerts are held there. If you are travelling to attend an event, it is advisable to check the date in advance. It was also agreed that the Weidenau Way of the Cross would be loaned to the cultural church on a permanent basis.
Dollenbruch and Hiking Trails
The Dollenbruch nature reserve lies between Brachthausen and Silberg. Covering around 98 hectares, it includes moorland and alder woodland, as well as open grassland with wet meadows and purple moor-grass meadows; it also includes FFH sites. The area provides valuable habitat for many rare and endangered animal and plant species.
The 4.5 km “Grenzgeschichten hautnah” (Border Stories Up Close) themed hiking trail passes through the Dollenbruch nature reserve. Podcast anecdotes bring cultural and natural history to life along the way. A longer option is the family-friendly “Naturschätze am Kölschen Heck” (Natural Treasures on the Kölsche Heck) circular trail: it starts and ends in Silberg, is 9.2 km long and takes about 2.5 hours. The route passes through the Sellenbruch and Dollenbruch nature reserves and is considered culturally interesting. In Silberg, the marked trail heads south along Müsener Straße to the so-called Kölsche Heck. Comparing the distances helps with planning: the themed trail is 4.5 km, while the circular route is 9.2 km and has a stated duration.
