Kronenburg: Castle Ruins, Lake and Eifel Trails
Accommodation in Kronenburg
Kronenburg combines historic buildings and trails with the Kronenburger See and its water sports. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: explore the historic center, choose a hiking route or plan some time by the water. The Kyll Cycle Route also passes directly by the lake.
Castle, Historic Center and Architecture
Kronenburg Castle is now a ruin. From up there, you can enjoy a view over the Kyll Valley. In the historic center, you can stroll through narrow lanes and past medieval houses within the castle ring. A short walk takes you past different aspects of Kronenburg’s history: the ruin and the traditional townscape with its lanes and houses.
The parish church of St. John the Baptist has a distinctive architectural feature. It dates from the 15th century; its striking rib vault is supported by a single central pillar. This design makes the church a notable example of the architectural styles you can discover as you explore Kronenburg’s history.
Above the historic center, the Dr. Axe Foundation has operated a farm complex at Hasenberghof since 2011, where animal welfare projects are carried out. It also houses an art gallery with changing exhibitions of paintings by the DĂĽsseldorf School of Painting. The exhibitions change; the art trail in Kronenburg invites you to follow in its footsteps.
Hiking Trails and Viewpoint
For hiking plans, the Eifeler Quellenpfad offers a clearly defined circular route: the trail is 68 kilometers long and runs from Kronenburg via Dahlem, Vierherrenstein, Blankenheim and Nettersheim, as well as Schmidtheim, back to Kronenburg. The named stops show that the loop connects several places and ends back in Kronenburg. If you are planning a long hike, the stated total distance gives you a concrete guide for choosing your route.
The Eifel-Blick offers another way to orient yourself: it is located on the Willibrordusweg and the local “Around Kronenburg” circular hiking trail. When choosing a route, you can distinguish between the explicitly 68-kilometer circular route and the trails that pass the Eifel-Blick. The castle offers another perspective, with its view over the Kyll Valley.
Kronenburger See: Nature and Water Sports
Kronenburger See covers 27 hectares and is a recreational lake for sailing, surfing and swimming. The Kyll Cycle Route passes directly by the lake, so you can combine a bike ride with time by the water. A bird-watching station is also located on the shore, between the campsite and the forebay. A fixed viewing telescope and identification boards showing the waterbird species found here help you observe and identify the birds.
There are also activities on the water: the sailing and water sports station offers sailing and water sports courses and instruction. You can also rent various sailboats, SUPs and kayaks there. Courses, instruction and rentals are seasonal and weather-dependent; individual recreational activities at the lake may also vary by season. Check the conditions before making plans if you have a specific activity in mind.
