The Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal gives Lonsheim a clear connection to a hiking break. The premium circular hiking trail crosses Lonsheim’s municipal area, passing through vineyards, meadows and woodland. One of its viewpoints is the tower on the Hemm. The circular route thus brings together varied landscape impressions and a named destination.

Hiking the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal

From Lonsheim, hikers can reach the Hiwweltour via the car park next to the Catholic church. The orange-marked access trail is signposted and joins the main route after about 800 metres. This distance refers to this access route to the main trail. Signposting and access may change; check the current situation before your hike.

Observation tower on the Hemm

The observation tower stands on the Hemm in Lonsheim Forest and offers views across Lonsheim and the rolling hills of Rheinhessen. It was built as a memorial to participants in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. This dedication gives the viewpoint a historical connection in addition to its landscape views.

There is also a rest area with tables and benches where hikers can take a break. Facilities may change or be temporarily unavailable; check the current status if you plan to use them.

More to discover in the wider Alzey-Worms destination

The wider Alzey-Worms destination is ideal for day trips and holidays. The prehistory and early history exhibition at the Alzey town museum traces the cultural and historical development of central Rheinhessen, from the Neolithic Age through the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages to the Merovingian period. It documents a span of more than 6,000 years. The geology and palaeontology exhibition, dedicated to the Mainz Basin, explores a different timescale. Its development over millions of years can be traced there through minerals, especially fossils.

The Alzey Art & Culture Hiking Trail also connects a trail theme with specific sights: it passes through vineyards and includes 20 works of art and 22 vineyard huts. The wider destination is also home to Petersberg, between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim. It is 246 metres high, covered in vines, and offers far-reaching views across the Wonnegau and the rolling hills.

The white trulli in and around Flonheim offer another distinct cultural thread. These small vineyard huts were built by itinerant workers from Lombardy. Together with the exhibition at the Alzey museum, they provide a range of themes for planning a trip in the wider destination: landscapes and views, vineyard architecture, and cultural and geological history. The Trullo on Adelberg in Flonheim is also accessible on foot via the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal in the wider Alzey-Worms destination; tables and benches are located right next to the trullo.
