Biebelnheim brings together church history, winegrowing, and the Rheinhessen Pilgrimage Route. When choosing accommodation, you can first decide which of these aspects you want to shape your stay: historic buildings and archaeological sites, the wine landscape with its vinothek, or the pilgrimage route through the vineyards. This lets you connect your search for hotels with the things that interest you locally.

Winegrowing and the Way of St. James

Biebelnheim lies at the foot of the Rosenberg and Pilgerstein vineyard sites, near Petersberg. The vineyards cover just over 200 hectares and are cultivated by nine wineries and a similar number of hobby winegrowers. This scale makes winegrowing a defining part of the local character. At Pilgerstein, the connection between soil and grape variety is also clear: the highly calcareous soils particularly favor Burgundy varieties. The Way of St. James runs through the vineyards of Biebelnheim’s Pilgerstein site and continues uphill toward nearby Petersberg. Weingut Udo Diel welcomes pilgrims on the Way of St. James and offers wine tastings and wine sales at its vinothek in town. If you plan to attend a tasting or shop at the vinothek, it is recommended that you arrange this with the winery in advance.

Churches and Historic Traces

A church in Biebelnheim is first mentioned in 1216. The pilgrims’ hospice existed from around 1350 to 1567. The Catholic church was built in 1737 on the former site of the hospice and incorporates three wooden figures from the 14th century. The Evangelical church was built in its present form in 1769–1770. During its renovation in 1887, a gravestone for Margarethe von Biebelnheim was discovered, bearing the date 1589. Beside the cemetery stands a substantial stone wall, thought to be the remains of a former manor estate.

More Perspectives in Alzey-Worms

In the wider destination of Alzey-Worms, a visit to the town of Alzey adds further historical and natural-history perspectives to the local themes. The Museum of the City of Alzey’s prehistoric and early historic exhibition traces the cultural history of central Rheinhessen from the Neolithic Age through the Bronze, Iron, and Roman Ages to the Merovingian period; it spans more than 6,000 years. Another exhibition focuses on the geology and paleontology of the Mainz Basin. Minerals, especially fossils, help visitors trace the basin’s development over millions of years.
