In Flonheim, sandstone connects several cultural and landscape themes: the local history museum explores its geological origins and later use as a building material; the sandstone quarries and Flonheim Jewish Cemetery also tell the story of the stone. At the same time, the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal trail winds through meadows, past trulli and through forests, with sweeping views across the Rheinhessen Switzerland. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: local history, geology or a scenic route.

Local History Museum and the Story of Sandstone

The Flonheim Local History Museum explores how Flonheim sandstone was formed and how it was later used as a building material. The Remembrance Room offers a different perspective: documents, photographs and objects convey personal stories from local life. The museum therefore focuses both on the development and use of a material and on individual memories.

The story of sandstone can also be followed beyond the museum. Flonheim Jewish Cemetery contains around 60 gravestones, most of them made from Flonheim sandstone. The cemetery adds another local connection to the story of the material; the number of gravestones is approximate.

Trails and Quarries

The Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal trail leads through meadows, past trulli and through forests. Along the way, it offers sweeping views across the Rheinhessen Switzerland. The trail provides a scenic counterpoint to the themes of the local history museum: it passes through a variety of landscapes, while the museum focuses on geological development and local life stories.

The quarries offer their own points of interest. One circular trail visits the andesite quarries in the Aulheimer Tal; another passes the Flonheim sandstone quarries. When choosing a trail, you can therefore follow the geological themes described here: andesite in the Aulheimer Tal or Flonheim’s sandstone quarries. No walking time or distance is specified.

Trulli in Flonheim and Regional Perspectives

In the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the white trulli in and around Flonheim are small vineyard buildings constructed by migrant workers from Lombardy. One specific trullo stands on the Adelberg in Flonheim. It can be reached on foot via the Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal; tables and benches stand right next to it. Alongside its scenic views, the trail therefore also offers a named point of interest.

If you broaden your view to include the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the Alzey City Museum adds further perspectives to Flonheim’s themes. Its prehistory and early history exhibition spans more than 6,000 years, from the Neolithic through the Bronze, Iron and Roman periods to the Merovingian period. An exhibition on geology and paleontology focuses on the Mainz Basin. Its development over millions of years can be traced through minerals, especially fossils.

The Geistermühle is another mill-related attraction in the wider Alzey-Worms destination. This historic mill complex, with its half-timbered buildings and fully preserved watermill, offers guided tours explaining the process from grain to flour. Alongside Flonheim’s themes of sandstone, trulli and local history, the region also offers insights into the history of milling.
