Discover Blankenrath
Accommodation in Blankenrath
Blankenrath can be explored through two distinct themes: trails through forests and meadows, and landmarks that tell the story of the village. If you are looking for a hotel in Blankenrath, these interests can help shape your trip. Hiking options include both shorter paths and a longer circular trail; the church and village center showcase architectural styles and places of remembrance from different centuries.
Hiking trails of different lengths
The parish hiking trail opened in 2010. This circular route, approximately 20 kilometers long, leads from the parish church in Blankenrath to chapels in neighboring villages. It connects Blankenrath with Reidenhausen, Haserich, Panzweiler, Walhausen, Schauren and Hesweiler. If you do not want to tackle the entire loop, the trail also has twelve shorter sections ranging from 2 to 20 kilometers. This range offers everything from a shorter leg to the full loop.
Separate from this are short, easy walks that start in Blankenrath and lead to the HanosiusmĂĽhle chapel or the Flaumbachtal pond. They are usually 4 to 7 kilometers long. Compared with the approximately 20-kilometer parish loop, these routes offer a different scale for the day. Two stages of the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig also run directly alongside Blankenrath. Forest and meadow trails in and around the village offer routes ranging from leisurely to more physically demanding.
Church architecture and local history
The Church of the Assumption of Mary brings together building elements from different periods. The nave was built in 1761/1762. The Romanesque church tower is considered the oldest surviving witness to Blankenrath’s history. It is 33 meters high and topped by an octagonal pyramidal roof with a gilded rooster at its peak. During a renovation in 1975, the altar area was redesigned around the Tree of Life motif.
Another historic site is the Lourdes Grotto, built in 1974. It serves as a place of prayer and is visited by people from the surrounding area. The path to the grotto includes 14 Stations of the Cross: bronze plaques are mounted on basalt columns. Its religious use and the Stations of the Cross give this destination a different character from the buildings in the village center.
The village center also offers architectural clues to Blankenrath’s development. There you will find half-timbered houses and villas dating from the 18th to the early 20th century. Their different building types and periods add another perspective to the story of the church: alongside the religious building, homes from different eras also shape the look of the village center.
Flaumbachtal pond and short walks
The Flaumbachtal pond lies on the eastern edge of Blankenrath, surrounded by the local landscape. Benches by the pond offer places to rest and watch ducks and fish. The pond is also a destination on the short walks, which are usually 4 to 7 kilometers long. Choosing a shorter route thus gives you a specific nature destination; those interested in the longer loop or more challenging hikes can find other route options in and around Blankenrath.
