Peterswald-Löffelscheid: Churches and Nature in the Hunsrück
Accommodation in Peterswald-Löffelscheid
Peterswald-Löffelscheid is located in the Hunsrück, about eight kilometres southeast of Zell (Mosel). The two districts, Peterswald and Löffelscheid, each have their own church. The surrounding forests, meadows and stream valleys offer space for walks and hikes. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around local history, nature and other activities.
Two Districts, Different Churches
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1765/66, stands in the centre of Peterswald. The Church of the Visitation of Mary in Löffelscheid was consecrated in 1964. It is a striking circular building formed by two interlocking cones; its freestanding tower is 28 metres high. The two churches thus clearly reflect different architectural forms and periods: the church in the centre of Peterswald, and the circular building in Löffelscheid. If you are interested in religious architecture, the construction dates, basic shapes and tower height offer concrete details for comparing the two districts.
Peterswald is also home to the Marienkapelle, locally known as “Bildchen”, which serves as a pilgrimage destination. It adds another religious landmark to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.
Hikes and Views
The nearby forests, meadows and stream valleys offer space for walks and hikes. The Altlayer Schweiz has a different, rocky character: sharp-edged slate rocks, rocky stretches, woodland paths, stream valleys and far-reaching views shape the hiking experience. The trail is certified with 90 points of interest. From the Stahlkreuz viewpoint, you can look across to Peterswald-Löffelscheid on the heights of the Hunsrück. This makes the village itself a point of reference in the view. When choosing a hike, it makes a difference whether you would rather focus on views of the village or on the rocky and woodland stretches.
This trail also includes a via ferrata on rocky terrain, secured with a steel cable. Terrain conditions can vary; take this into account when planning your hike.
Travelling with a Dog
The dog playground in Peterswald-Löffelscheid gives dogs room to move freely, play and interact with other dogs. Play and training equipment lets them test their agility. Dog owners can also meet there and spend time together. If you are travelling with a dog, you can include the playground as a separate activity alongside walks.
In the Wider Cochem-Zell Destination
The medieval Imperial Castle of Cochem is another cultural landmark in the wider Cochem-Zell destination. In the 19th century, during the Romantic castle revival, Louis Ravené restored and rebuilt it in the Neo-Gothic style. Rooms open to visitors include the Knights’ Hall, dining hall, hunting room and bower. Another point of interest is the Jungferweiher, an important breeding and stopover area for numerous bird species, especially during spring and autumn migration. Alongside its castle culture, Cochem-Zell thus offers a seasonal nature attraction.
A visitor programme published in July 2025 lists the bus or train line suitable for many tourist attractions in Cochem-Zell. Specific lines may change; check the connection that works for you before travelling.
