Sankt Aldegund can be explored from several perspectives: its historic buildings, the Moselle landscape, trails above the river and activities on the water. If you are looking for a hotel in Sankt Aldegund, you can first consider whether local history, hiking and cycling, or the Moselle itself will be the main focus of your trip.

Historic Town Centre and Architecture

The historic town centre is protected as the Sankt Aldegund town centre conservation area. If this protected status is relevant to your plans, check its current status. Along Christophorusstraße and Auf der Teusch, Moselle winegrowers’ houses have half-timbered upper storeys dating from the 15th to the 18th century. Brown ceramic plaques explain the history of most of the old town’s historic buildings. This lets you trace the architectural history of individual buildings and take a closer look at the different houses in the townscape.

The Romanesque church has a valuable altar dating from 1601. The Old Church is used for religious services and cultural events. A footpath through vineyards and gardens leads there; from the Old Church, you can enjoy views over Sankt Aldegund. The Ludwig tomb can be viewed from the outside. A small harbour is a reminder of the town’s former Moselle shipping; it served as a mooring for horse-drawn towboat traffic on the Moselle.

Hiking and Cycling with Views of the Moselle

Sankt Aldegund is known as a wine-growing town. Numerous hiking trails above the Moselle barrage offer views across the Moselle Valley. Sturdy footwear is required on the Palmberg Trail; as conditions can vary, it is worth checking the current trail conditions before setting out. An additional loop from the Palmberg Trail passes through natural areas, woodland and fields.

The Felsen.Fässer.Fachwerk Cultural Trail is approximately 9 km long. Its main route is 5 km, with an additional 4 km loop. These distances give you a clear idea of whether the main route or the full circuit is a better fit for your plans. The Moselle Cycle Route network is considered well developed and signposted in the Sankt Aldegund area. The Moselle cycling tour passes through Neef, Sankt Aldegund and Alf, in that order. Check the signs and route conditions before setting off.

The Moselle, Leisure and Wine

From a plateau next to the riverside road, you can watch the Moselle lock in operation. There is a landing stage right in Sankt Aldegund, above a river lock. The lake-like stretch of the Moselle in front of the town is considered suitable for water sports; water conditions vary by season and should be taken into account when planning.

Raulwing-Platz is a recreational area above the vineyards, with facilities for picnicking and barbecuing. It offers a place to take a break outdoors, in addition to the hiking and cycling routes. Wine is another distinctive feature of the area: wines from the Himmelreich, Klosterkammer and Palmberg Terrassen vineyards are available to enjoy. Together with the historic Moselle winegrowers’ houses, these vineyards give visitors interested in including wine in their plans even more ways to explore the town.
