Gillenbeuren: Art and Trails in the Eifel
Accommodation in Gillenbeuren
Gillenbeuren is a quiet place in the distinctive Eifel landscape and is known locally as an artists’ village. Local artists organize recurring events such as the Sommernachtsraum. There are also specific options for hikers and road cyclists: an easy circular trail, a stage of the Eifel-Camino and the Vulkaneifel Challenge. Their distances and levels of difficulty differ considerably. This can help you decide whether to visit for open-air art, a hike or a challenging cycling tour.
Open-air art: the Sommernachtsraum
The Sommernachtsraum is an open-air art exhibition in the park-like garden of Dorothea Kirsch in Gillenbeuren. A report from 2025 noted that Kirsch has been inviting artists to display their work outdoors for more than 20 years. The combination of garden and exhibition is part of the format: in the 2025 edition, trees served as exhibition spaces, and almost life-size wooden sculptures welcomed visitors.
The fact that the event recurs does not mean every edition is the same: artists and dates may vary. If the Sommernachtsraum is a reason for your trip, check the dates for the relevant edition.
Hikes: the circular trail and Eifel-Camino
The HeimatSpur Weiherbachtal Circular Trail is an easy 8.2-kilometer loop. It follows the Weiherbach and Erdenbach valleys to a viewpoint overlooking Lutzerath, the Vulkaneifel and the Moselle Heights. Highlights include the Weiherbachtal, Erdenbachtal and the Spanik viewpoint. Before setting out, it is worth checking the current route, as diversions or maintenance work may affect the trail and viewpoints.
Stage 4 of the Eifel-Camino runs from Kaisersesch to Lutzerath, is 19.9 kilometers long and is rated easy. It is listed as taking around four hours and 51 minutes. From Alflen, the trail heads south through meadows and fields towards Gillenbeuren and then on to Driesch. Compared with the 8.2-kilometer HeimatSpur, this stage is considerably longer, although both trails are rated easy. The stated time applies to this Eifel-Camino stage.
Road cycling on the Vulkaneifel Challenge
The Vulkaneifel Challenge is a challenging road cycling tour of just under 133 kilometers with more than 2,100 meters of elevation gain. It combines demanding climbs with quieter sections and low-traffic roads. Gillenbeuren is listed as one of the challenge’s stage locations. Compared with the easy hiking trails, this is a considerably more demanding cycling route.
As routes and traffic conditions can change, check the current route before setting out. The options are clearly different for trip planning: the Sommernachtsraum offers a cultural highlight, the hiking trails provide two routes of different lengths, and the challenge is intended for a demanding road cycling tour.
