Merl brings together the history of winegrowing, historic architecture and connections to the landscape of the Merler Bachtal. You can choose different focuses for your stay: the Pissamann Wine Trail and the winemakers’ offerings are devoted to wine, churches and residential towers represent the area’s architectural history, and the Pissamann Circular Hiking Trail leads through vineyards and forests to the higher elevations of Zell-Merl. This lets you decide whether wine, cultural history or scenery should be the main focus of your trip.

Winegrowing: Trail, Tradition and Tasting

The Pissamann Wine Trail in the Merl district features 15 panels about work in the vineyards and grape varieties. Unlike a wine tasting, it introduces winegrowing through information on the panels. If you are interested in vineyard work or grape varieties, the trail offers a clear thematic focus.

The so-called “Merl Riesling” is part of a historical tradition: it is associated with the cultivation of Riesling grapes in Merl in the 17th century and their spread from there along the Moselle and Rhine. This tradition places Merl within the history of Riesling on both rivers. The Merl Wine Festival has also long been a highlight of the district’s annual calendar. If you would like to combine your stay with a festival visit, check the specific dates in advance.

Wine tastings are offered at the Ernst Steffens winery in Zell-Merl, including in English. The tastings feature Riesling wines from traditional steep-slope vineyards, as well as different vintages of Riesling, MĂĽller-Thurgau, Kerner, Bacchus, Grauburgunder and Dornfelder. The experience includes a behind-the-scenes look or a tour of the vaulted cellar, as well as a film about the work involved throughout the winemaking year. Wine tastings take place on Tuesdays or by arrangement. Plan around this day of the week, or enquire about another date.

Merl’s Landscape and Circular Hiking Trail

Merl lies at the entrance to the Merler Bachtal, which extends far up into the HunsrĂĽck. The Pissamann Circular Hiking Trail Zell-Merl leads through vineyards and forests up to the higher elevations of Zell-Merl at 410 m. The route offers views across the Zellerland and the heights of the HunsrĂĽck and Eifel. Unlike the wine trail, the circular hike combines vineyards with sections through forests and wide-ranging views; each route offers a different experience.

Architectural History and Historic Traces

The former Franciscan monastery houses the Merl Dormitory. Four wood samples date its roof structure to 1293/94. St. Michael’s Parish Church in Zell-Merl once belonged to a Franciscan monastery, which is thought to date back to the late 13th century. The carved Antwerp altarpiece, created around 1520, is worth seeing. The probable date of the monastery’s construction and the later date of the altarpiece thus stand side by side.

Historic homes and medieval residential towers once owned by noble families have been preserved in Zandtstraße. The residential tower at Zandtstraße 70 is dated to 1328 and probably belonged to the squire Friedrich Mohr vom Wald. Merl’s cemetery is overlooked by a Romanesque chancel tower, which is all that remains of the town’s old parish church.

The well-preserved Zandthof is also one of Merl’s historic buildings: it was the ancestral home and castle of the von Zandt family and is privately owned. Its former function sets it apart from the ecclesiastical buildings and the residential towers in Zandtstraße.
