Wolfstein: Mining History, Castle Ruins and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Wolfstein
Wolfstein has a history spanning more than 730 years. The historic old town is freely accessible year-round. With mining on Königsberg, castle ruins and hiking trails, the town offers several different points of interest. When planning your stay, you can focus on local history, industrial history or outdoor excursions.
Historic Town Center, Mining and Castle Ruins
The limestone mine on Königsberg is an industrial monument in Wolfstein. Mining on and around the Königsberg massif can be traced back to Roman times. The mine’s large, artificially created caverns reveal the geological structure of Königsberg. Both its long mining history and its geological formation are therefore among the features that define Wolfstein.
Altwolfstein dates from the 12th century and is one of the oldest castle complexes in the region; Neuwolfstein was built above Wolfstein in the late 13th century. The ruins of Altwolfstein are freely accessible. Surviving features include a striking pentagonal keep, sections of the curtain wall and traces of an outer bailey. Its elevated position offers views across the surrounding countryside. The ruins of Neuwolfstein are also freely accessible. Parts of the curtain wall and shield wall, as well as the foundations of former buildings, remain there. Its elevated position offers views over Wolfstein and the Lauter Valley.
Wolfstein’s attractions also include three museums. If you plan to visit one, check visiting arrangements before you travel.
Hikes and Trails Around Wolfstein
Guided walks through the Wolfstein Forest are offered in cooperation with the tourist information office. Guided forest walks and hikes around Wolfstein can also be arranged for a duration planned according to guests’ wishes. Agree on your preferred duration in advance if it is important for your plans.
A hiking map for the Wolfstein area covers twelve trails. The Wolfstein-Königsbach Trail is 9.7 kilometers long and rated moderate. Its features include narrow paths, scree slopes, small caves and a small lake. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider its described features as well as its length and difficulty rating. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
The Pfälzer Höhenweg leads to Wolfstein and the train station via a connecting trail. Along the Höhenweg, you can switch to the Veldenz Trail near Aschbach and to the Remigius Trail near Selberg. These connections offer additional options for planning your hike, without requiring every trip to follow the same route.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
