Gleisweiler: Wine, Trails and History
Accommodation in Gleisweiler
Gleisweiler lies at the transition between the eastern Palatinate Forest and the wine-growing areas of the Southern Wine Route. Its south-easterly aspect and the protective hills to the west shape a mild climate with a Mediterranean feel. Almonds, figs, lemons, kiwis and sweet chestnuts thrive in and around Gleisweiler. Winegrowing also has a long history here: the tradition dates back at least to 1770, and the local vineyard site is called “Hölle.”
Hiking trails with clearly named destinations
Marked hiking trails start and finish in Gleisweiler; destinations include the St. Anna pilgrimage church. The Trifelsblickweg connects the village with the TrifelsblickhĂĽtte and the weather cross on Teufelsberg. The named trails can therefore be distinguished by their destinations: one focuses on a pilgrimage church, the other on the hut and weather cross on Teufelsberg.
From the historic village center, the view stretches across the Rhine Plain. The center is also connected to an extensive network of hiking trails with huts and the historic forest shower. Both specific destinations and a far-reaching trail network are therefore part of hiking in Gleisweiler.
Historic village center and architecture
The listed historic village center is distinguished by its largely intact historic buildings and picturesque lanes; most of the houses date from the 16th to the 18th century. The Catholic Church of St. Stephanus is considered an example of medieval architecture in the Palatinate and is part of the European project Sternenweg – Chemin des Étoiles. A building dating from the 18th century serves as a venue for art, design and photography of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Paper history and the forest shower
The Paper Museum presents the history of paper and traditional papermaking, based on the paper mill founded in Gleisweiler in 1818. On the first Sunday of each month, you can make paper yourself there using traditional methods. Check current visiting dates and seasonal opening hours before your trip.
Another stop with a history of its own is the forest shower in the Hainbachtal valley. It was built in 1848 for cold-water treatments associated with the Bad Gleisweiler clinic. The forest shower is a cold-water shower with a water temperature of 8 to 12 °C.
Winegrowing, festivals and regional cuisine
The festival Wine & Art traditionally takes place on the first weekend in August. An annual exhibition opening at the Kurpfälzischer Zehnthof gets it underway informally; during the festival, wineries also open their courtyards and offer food and local wine. Participating wineries and the dishes on offer vary from year to year. Check the exact dates and program for your travel year.
At Weingut F. G. Kost, typical Palatinate grape varieties have been grown for several generations. The winery’s wine tavern serves Saumagen and liver dumplings with wine. Alongside its winegrowing history, Gleisweiler thus offers concrete connections to regional grape varieties and Palatinate cuisine.
The Southern Wine Route as a regional setting
In the broader regional setting of the Southern Wine Route, vineyards, the Rhine Plain and the Palatinate Forest shape the landscape alongside castles, viewpoints and an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails.
