Eddelak brings together several cultural and historical themes: the architectural history of St. Mary’s Church, historic agricultural equipment and a windmill that can also be used for weddings. When deciding on your trip, you can therefore consider whether you are especially interested in architecture, agricultural history or milling technology. The wider destination of Dithmarschen also offers museums, archaeological sites and coastal nature experiences.

Church, Agriculture and Mill History in Eddelak

St. Mary’s Church in Eddelak is a Baroque brick church. It was completed in 1740 on the foundations of an earlier church. Its architectural history therefore brings together two periods: the earlier church, whose foundations were reused, and the building completed in 1740. The year marks the completion of this church building, not the age of the older foundations. The brick construction and connection to an earlier building give the church a clear architectural history focus.

The museum farm displays historic agricultural equipment. This turns the focus to tools and the history of agriculture, while the church is defined above all by its architectural form and history. Together, the two sites offer different ways to explore the past: one through a religious building, the other through equipment associated with agricultural work.

Another point of interest is the “Gott mit uns” mill in Eddelak. Built in 1865, it is a Dutch-style windmill. It can also be used for weddings. The mill thus combines a specific construction date and a clearly defined architectural type with a possible setting for a ceremony. If you are planning a wedding, check availability in advance.

Dithmarschen as a Wider Travel Destination

For a broader look at regional history, the Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf provides an overview of 1,200 years of Dithmarschen. Its historical span ranges from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. The Dithmarschen museum landscape also demonstrates the breadth of the region’s cultural offerings: it brings together 19 museums, run by both paid staff and volunteers, at eleven locations. Alongside individual buildings and collections, regional developments and different museum sites are therefore also available as subjects to explore.

In the wider destination of Dithmarschen, the Stone Age Park offers hands-on activities such as flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, fire making and bread baking. Activities may vary depending on the programme, so check the current offerings before your visit. The Stone Age Forest is located in Albersdorf, next to the Stone Age Park. This approximately 40-hectare, natural outdoor site includes nine original archaeological monuments and is permanently free to access. Check access arrangements again when planning your visit.

The coast offers a different focus. The Friedrichskoog National Park Station is an information centre with a national park exhibition on the south side of the harbour. Guided mudflat walks along the Dithmarschen coast are led by local National Park mudflat guides with specialist knowledge; at low tide, they reveal the rich variety of life in the Wadden Sea. Tides and guided tour times vary. Check current tide and tour information when arranging your visit.

The wider destination of Dithmarschen offers a variety of hiking routes. The “Mötjensee and Sea Eagle” circular trail near Lunden is 12.79 kilometres long and described as an easy route for flatland hiking. The first stage of the North–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail also runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometres long; the entire long-distance trail comprises five stages and runs from Meldorf to Kiel. The distances help you compare the scale of a circular trail and a long-distance hiking stage.
