In Hemdingen, moorland, a cycling route and local history come together. Himmelmoor, Süllbarg and the Ox Road offer different starting points for planning your trip. If you are considering Hemdingen as a destination, you can first decide whether cycling, nature or historical topics should be your main focus.

Moorland and protected areas

Himmelmoor in Hemdingen is a recommended local recreation destination in the Amt Rantzau. The 582-hectare nature reserve also includes areas in Hemdingen. Protected habitats include remaining raised bogs and bog woodlands, fen areas, wet meadows, species-rich grassland, still waters and former peat extraction sites. The area thus encompasses various bog and wetland habitats, as well as areas associated with past use.

In northeastern Hemdingen, surviving prehistoric burial mounds form the Süllbarg nature area on the edge of Vielmoor. The area was placed under nature protection in 1935. Agricultural land is also part of the local landscape: Hemdingen has extensive agricultural areas. Himmelsmoor is another distinct point of historical interest, where industrial peat extraction ended in 2018.

Cycling on the Ox Road

The Ox Road from Wedel to Jutland is a cycling route that runs through western Hemdingen and has a rest area there. Depending on the route variant, the Ox Road is approximately 240 kilometres long in total. This approximate figure refers to the route, not the section in Hemdingen. Along the way, the Ox Road connects moorland, forests and geest landscapes with historic places and towns, away from heavily trafficked roads.

Outside Hemdingen, there is an information board on Heeder Straße near Hof Kühl. It informs cyclists about Hemdingen and its history, as well as nearby moors and their historical use.

Local character and shops

Local businesses include a wine shop and a bakery, several farm shops, and agricultural businesses that sell some of their products directly. Hemdingen also has two butcher shops. Business details may change; if you are planning to shop, check the latest information for the businesses in question.

Planning your journey

The L111 and L195 are important for navigating the road network: they connect Hemdingen with Quickborn and Barmstedt, as well as with the A7 and A23 motorways. These connections give you an overview of the town’s road links without specifying a particular travel time or distance.

Bus route 294 provides public transport connections on weekdays and runs via Quickborn and Barmstedt to the AKN rail network. Its weekday service is relevant when planning your journey. Check the current timetable before travelling, as service and journey times may change.

The local attractions can therefore be considered according to different interests: the Ox Road offers a clear connection to cycling, while Himmelmoor, Süllbarg and the information board cover nature and local history. Which of these aspects matters most to you can help you decide whether Hemdingen is a suitable destination for your stay.
