Discover Uetersen: Rosarium, monastery and Langes Tannen
Accommodation in Uetersen
Uetersen brings together garden culture, historic architecture and local history. When searching for a hotel, consider which focus you would like to shape your stay: roses and garden art, historic buildings, local history or time outdoors. The attractions offer different ways to explore these themes.
Uetersen Rosarium and garden art
Uetersen Rosarium is the largest rose garden in northern Germany and a centre of German rose cultivation. Around 30,000 roses bloom there in June. A visit to the Rosarium is ideal for a stroll through the park; there are also seating areas and play facilities. If you are especially interested in roses, this is a clear focus for your visit. The number of blooms makes June a particularly special time to explore this theme.
The monastery and historic buildings
The historic buildings of the Noble Convent are set in park-like grounds that are ideal for a stroll at any time of year. Different periods of architectural history stand side by side nearby: the Prioress’s House is Uetersen’s oldest house, built in 1664 and listed as a historic monument. The late Baroque convent church dates from 1748/1749 and features a ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Innocenzo Colombo. The church at the convent also preserves a 17th-century relief of the Last Supper on its altar. These historic highlights span everything from an early architectural landmark to later religious architecture and art.
Langes Tannen: landscape and museum ensemble
The 26-hectare Langes Tannen grounds include woodland, meadows, fields, parkland and ponds; they are intended as a public recreational area. The Langes Tannen Museum comprises three listed buildings: a Neoclassical manor house from the early 19th century, a barn dating from 1762 that was rebuilt after an arson attack, and the remains of a mill dating from 1796. The manor house presents a reconstructed picture of middle-class domestic life in northern Germany, with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. The rebuilt museum barn contains an exhibition space for art and culture. The landscape and architectural history can be explored here as different facets of the same theme.
Local history and themed tour
The Museum of Uetersen’s Town and Local History is housed in a former municipal utilities workshop building that is 150 years old. The Uetersen Local History Museum explores local history through shipping, whaling, crafts and rose cultivation. For visitors who would like to combine nature, history and garden art, the “Geology and Gardens” tour starts at Uetersen Town Hall. Among other places, it links the Rosarium with Langes Tannen Park. The tour therefore offers a different focus from a visit to a single museum or building.
Oberglinde natural outdoor swimming pool
Oberglinde natural outdoor swimming pool offers natural swimming; it operates seasonally, and the water quality is checked regularly. The sunbathing lawn and beach are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Beach volleyball, basketball and table tennis are also available. Free parking, showers, toilets, changing rooms and lockers are provided on site. As access arrangements should be checked before travelling and facilities may change, check the current conditions and the amenities you need before your visit.
