Egyházaskozár: Churches, Farmhouses and Landscape
Accommodation in Egyházaskozár
Egyházaskozár brings together church architecture, traditional farmhouses and a hilly landscape crisscrossed by valleys. The village’s sights include a Protestant church with a historic organ that is still in use, a modern-design Catholic Church of Saint Stephen, and Swabian farmhouses in the Baroque and Zopf styles. There is also an extensive pond system and local events. When planning your trip, therefore, consider both the architectural heritage and the right event date, or arrange a group programme in advance.
Churches and Architectural History
The Protestant church was built in the 18th century. Its organ was made about 200 years ago at József Marschall’s workshop in Bonyhád. It has 16 stops and is still in use today. According to a local tradition, the church was the first in the country to receive royal permission to build a tower. This tradition is thus a distinct part of the history surrounding the church building.
The Catholic Church of Saint Stephen was built by descendants of Catholic Csángó people and has a modern design. Together, the two churches represent different architectural and cultural influences in the village. Those interested in sacred architecture will find both an 18th-century church with a historic organ and a modern-design Catholic church building here.
Farmhouses, Hills and Ponds
Centuries-old Swabian farmhouses in the Baroque and Zopf styles add vernacular architecture to the village’s churchscape. These houses are a distinct part of the village’s appearance and provide another architectural focus alongside the churches.
The landscape is defined by loess-rich ridges cut through by numerous valleys. There is also an extensive pond system created by damming streams. Hills and valleys shape the terrain, while the ponds show how the streams were dammed. Thus, both natural landforms and a water system created through human intervention are part of the description of Egyházaskozár.
Events and Group Activities
Falunap is held every July. A wine-harvest procession takes place in autumn, and Kozári Napok is held in midsummer. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the exact date in advance. The three events offer different seasonal opportunities, while the churches and farmhouses are enduring features of the village.
The Szuppi Youth Guesthouse, forest school and riding stable offer groups horse-drawn carriage rides through the village and its surroundings. The ride can pass along the streets of Egyházaskozár and by characteristic farmhouses. A short off-road ride can also be included at the edge of the village. The programme is intended for groups; confirm current availability with the operator in advance.
The Szuppi Youth Guesthouse, forest school and riding stable also offer the accredited environmental education programmes “Száll az ének szájról szájra” and “Élőhelyek-élőlények.” Craft activities include felting, batik, candle-making, papermaking and leatherwork. As part of animal care, animals can be fed and groomed as needed under the supervision of an animal keeper. If interested, contact the operators in advance to ask which programmes are currently available and how participation is organised.
