Göncruszka brings together a biographical story connected to a curia, a marked section of the Zempléni gyümölcsút cycling route, and the founding of the Tejjel Mézzel community restaurant. These different local points of interest offer concrete themes to help guide your travel plans.

Curias and Local History

Kazinczy Klára, a sister of the writer and language reformer Kazinczy Ferenc, lived with her husband, Krajnyik József, in the former Kornis-Kazinczy Curia in Göncruszka. Krajnyik was a court judge from Košice. The story connects the former building with two people known by name and the time they spent there together.

Another local landmark is the Bárczay-Patay Curia. It is located in Göncruszka, to the left of the junction of Petőfi utca and Kazinczy utca. The two curias thus offer different points of reference: the Kornis-Kazinczy Curia is associated primarily with a biographical story, while the Bárczay-Patay Curia is notable for its precise location in the village.

Cycling Route and Community Restaurant

The 130-kilometre Zempléni gyümölcsút cycling route passes through Göncruszka on a section marked “Sárga barack” (Yellow Peach). The 130 kilometres refers to the total length of the cycling route; the section passing through Göncruszka has its own marking. This lets you distinguish the overall route from the local section when planning. Check current route conditions before setting out.

A more recent chapter in the village’s history is the founding of the Tejjel Mézzel community restaurant: the Reformed Congregation of Göncruszka founded it in 2020. Alongside the older curia-related history, this provides an example of a community initiative with a specific founding year.

Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén: More to Explore Across the Wider Destination

Caves and World Heritage are among the natural and cultural themes of the wider Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén destination. The Baradla-Domica Cave System is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst. A short Aggtelek cave tour is one kilometre long, takes 60 minutes, and is rated easy. These details answer different questions: the World Heritage status identifies the cave system, while the tour’s length, duration, and rating describe its time commitment.

A nature trail connects the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave and presents the natural and cultural history of the area. Szent-István Cave is known for its impressive stalactite formations. Together, a trail focused explicitly on interpretation and a cave with distinctive rock formations offer different ways to experience nature.

The Zemplén Landscape Protection Area is part of the Zemplén Mountains, whose natural features influence the area’s plant and animal life. The Hucul herd can be seen year-round on the pastures of Gergés-lápa, about 1.5 kilometres north of Jósvafő. As animal management conditions can change, check for current information before your visit.

Viticulture and built heritage also contribute to the wider regional picture. The climate, soil quality, and slope exposure of the Tokaj wine region are suitable for growing grapes; the region is also legally protected as a protected wine-growing area. In Sárospatak, a cellar complex beneath the park of Rákóczi Castle is about 2,000 metres long and includes two wine-tasting rooms. The Ungvári cellar labyrinth in Sátoraljaújhely connects at least 27 cellars and covers an area of 50,000 square metres.

Diósgyőr Castle flourished during the reign of King Louis the Great in the 14th century. Later, it served as a residence and as a wedding gift for six queens. For a trip through Lillafüred, the forest railway runs from Diósgyőr via Lillafüred to Garadna; check the timetable when planning your schedule.
