Lesencetomaj can be explored through a range of themes: St. Anne’s Church brings together several points in history, the park and meadow offer botanical interest, and a cycling route starts in the town. The options range from a cultural-historical detail to a 36-kilometre route. As you plan your trip, you can consider whether church and art history, nature or cycling should be the deciding factor.

St. Anne’s Church: Building History and Tombstone

St. Anne’s Church in Lesencetomaj was built in several stages. In 1754, it was rebuilt from its ruins and consecrated in the same year in honour of Saint Anne. In 1806, Bishop Károly Nedeczky had the church remodelled in the Classical style. Fifty-two years separate the rebuilding from this later stylistic change; the church was consecrated in the year it was rebuilt. The rebuilding and subsequent remodelling can therefore be seen as two distinct chapters in its history.

The church also contains a Gothic red-marble tombstone from 1400, decorated with the carved coat of arms of the Tomaj family. According to the inscription, the stone belonged to Pál, son of Jakab. The tombstone points to an earlier period than the rebuilding and renovation history. The building’s history and the tomb therefore offer different perspectives: changes to the church building on the one hand, and a single object with its own inscription and coat of arms on the other.

Park, Trees and a Protected Plant

The old park of the Lesencetomaj institute covers one and a half hectares. It is home to protected plane trees estimated to be 200 to 250 years old, as well as a sequoia. While specific dates give the church a tangible history, the tree species and their estimated ages offer a different timescale in the park. Another botanical feature is the Lesencetomaj láprét: it is the habitat of the strictly protected bird’s-eye primrose (Primula farinosa). The nature themes thus differ: the park focuses on trees and their estimated ages, while the meadow is the habitat of a protected plant species.

Cycling Along the Northern Edge of the Keszthely Hills

The 36-kilometre Lesence-kör cycling route starts in Lesencetomaj and runs along the northern edge of the Keszthely Hills. Its total length gives you a concrete sense of scale for planning your route, while its course places it along the edge of the hills. This makes cycling distinct from the cultural and nature themes focused on the town: the emphasis is on a route with a named starting point, a stated total length and a described direction. These details can help you consider cycling as a separate focus alongside the church and botanical features.

More Themes in the Broader Lake Balaton – North Destination

The broader Lake Balaton – North destination offers other distinct themes to help you explore the region. Boat trips are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also has a guided exhibition called “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town of Tapolca, of which 14.6 kilometres have been explored so far. Thus, alongside local history and botanical features, the broader destination offers karst, boat trips and a themed exhibition as different areas of interest.

Another geological point of interest in the broader Lake Balaton – North destination is Hegyestű, a 337-metre-high hill between Zánka and Monoszló. The inner face of a basalt volcano that was active around eight million years ago is exposed there. From the viewpoint at the western edge of the quarry, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panorama board. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. The height, volcanic structure, viewpoint and rock types each add a distinct element to this geological theme.
