A stay in Corsano can be planned around your main interests: hiking trails between the Serra and the sea on one hand, and architectural history and local traditions on the other. In the coastal area of Corsano, the landscape is shaped by rugged cliffs, Mediterranean scrub, holm oaks and stone pines.

Hiking trails between the Serra and the sea

A dense network of hiking trails runs through Corsano, descending from the Serra to the sea. The Sentiero della Vecchia Ferrovia passes through Corsano: the former railway line, now out of use, has been converted into a path through the Mediterranean scrub. Bridges and scenic tunnels are part of the route. This trail therefore focuses not only on the landscape but also on the line’s former use.

The Anello delle Vie del Sale also passes through Corsano. The Vie del Sale nature trail begins beyond the Cappella di Santa Maura and ends at Torre Specchia Grande. If specific landmarks are more helpful to your planning than general descriptions of the landscape, this route offers two clear points of reference: the chapel as the starting point and the tower as the destination.

Churches, chapels and architectural history

The Chiesa di Santa Sofia dates from the late Byzantine period and originally had the floor plan of a Greek cross. The floor plan describes the church’s original design, while the date places it in its historical context. The Cappella di San Bartolo was built in 1714. It houses a recently restored painting and a statue of the saint to whom the chapel is dedicated. The Congrega dell'Immacolata probably dates from the second half of the 18th century.

On 29 August 2026, the Chiesa di Santa Sofia was closed to the public because urgent restoration work was required on its foundations, which rest on a layer of sand. Check access again before your visit.

The Chiesa di San Biagio gives its name to the square where it stands. Palazzo Feudale Capece has a hanging garden and a citrus grove; the building is also in a poor state of preservation.

Local traditions and getting your bearings

Saint Maura is celebrated in Corsano every year on 1 May with a mass and a festival in a rocky landscape. The programme may change, so check the latest dates if you want to plan your trip around it. The nickname for the people of Corsano, “carcagni tosti,” is associated with the former practice of walking barefoot over the rocks of natural salt pans.

The historical and cultural walking route leads to the equipped picnic area in Zona Pozze. Alongside the churches and chapels, this specific destination is another landmark to help you find your way during your stay.
