St. Pankraz: Mill Paths, Churches and Village History
Accommodation in St. Pankraz
St. Pankraz combines hiking trails, mill remains and historic buildings. The routes vary in length and theme: the Mill Path focuses on old mills, the Trifterweg follows the Falschauer Gorge, and the nature trail combines nature and cultural themes. There are also churches, chapels and the history of Eschenlohe Castle. If you are looking for a hotel in St. Pankraz, these different highlights can help you plan your time here according to your interests.
Hiking trails with different highlights
The St. Pankraz Mill Path is an easy circular route of around 5 kilometres, starting in the village centre. The walking time is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Along the way are the remains of the StegmĂĽhle and AichermĂĽhle mills, as well as centuries-old millstones near the Linserhof. The route therefore combines a manageable distance with insights into the local history of milling.
The St. Pankraz Trifterweg is also a circular route, but at around 3.8 kilometres it is shorter than the Mill Path. It begins in the historic village centre and runs along the Falschauer Gorge. The two village routes therefore have different focuses: the gorge on one, historic mill sites on the other. An approximate walking time is also given for the Mill Path.
The St. Pankraz nature trail is a cultural and nature walk of around 6.3 kilometres, following narrow forest paths and gentle meadow trails. It crosses the slopes and ends below Eschenlohe Castle. Its 16 interactive information panels cover local flora, native wildlife and the geology of the valley. Another option is the hike to Hochjoch, an easy walk with no technical difficulties.
To Mariolberg Alm
The hike to Mariolberg Alm starts above St. Pankraz near St. Helena and follows hiking trails No. 5 and No. 9. Visitors are served traditional alpine dishes and dairy products made there, such as cheese and yoghurt. As food service may vary by season, check availability before your visit. The alpine hut is also very easy to reach by bicycle via the forest road; weather and maintenance may affect conditions.
Churches, chapels and history
The parish church of St. Pankraz stands on the site of the oldest church in the Ultental Valley. Remains of the old nave walls have been preserved. The castle ruins of Eschenlohe Castle lie just before St. Pankraz, on a wooded knoll where the Hagenbach and Falschauer meet. Another local story concerns the Häusl am Stein: it survived the 1882 flood because it had been built on a huge boulder.
The Chapel of St. Sebastian was built in memory of the victims of the plague and has a Baroque altar inside. The little Church of St. Helena stands on a small wooded hill above St. Pankraz and dates back to the 14th century. The parish community organises services, religious festivals and various events for all age groups. If you want to attend a particular event, check the date in advance.
Landscape and dates
The Pankraz reservoir lies about 2.5 kilometres above St. Pankraz at an altitude of 809 metres. In the valley, it is the lowest-lying reservoir and also the second largest. These two features give the reservoir a special place in the Ultental Valley.
The traditional market takes place every year in October in the village centre. For Saturday, 17 October 2026, it was scheduled from 08:00 to 14:00. These times refer to the 2026 edition; if travelling later, check the details for the relevant market. This helps distinguish the area’s enduring attractions—trails, buildings and landscape—from dates in the events calendar.
