Caldonazzo brings together lakeside scenery and a rich cultural history. Lake Caldonazzo is the largest lake located entirely within Trentino. The town stretches across a wide plain between the lake, orchards and the lively Centa stream. The lake, orchards and stream give the plain distinct landscape features. Two interests can guide your trip planning: seasonal swimming and a history reflected in churches, a castle and historical traces. This distinction can help you decide which themes to focus on during your stay.

Lake, Landscape and Open Spaces

Lake Caldonazzo provides a clear timeframe: swimming is possible from May to September, and the beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag. If you want to make swimming a central part of your stay, these months are especially relevant when planning. At the same time, the plain, the orchards and the Centa are distinctive landscape features of the town.

Parco del Lago is an enclosed green space with toilets and electricity. It includes an amphitheatre with a lawn and a covered stage, as well as a calisthenics area. This brings a green space, a stage and a calisthenics area together in one place. The park offers a tangible contrast to the expansive landscape around the lake: its designated areas shape a distinct, carefully designed side of Caldonazzo.

Churches, Castle and Historical Traces

The Chiesa di San Sisto brings together several distinct historical periods. It was first mentioned in 1345 and rebuilt in the 18th century. The church contains two large fragments of a Christian tombstone from the 6th century. It also houses the only surviving Serassi organ in Trentino, made by the organ-building family from Bergamo. For travellers interested in local history, the church brings together architectural history, Christian funerary art and organ building in one named location.

The Chiesa di San Valentino also broadens the historical perspective: it stands on Colle di Brenta and was probably built before 1259. The Roman military road Via Claudia Augusta once ran along the hilltop in front of the church. The church and the historic route offer two distinct ways to explore the town’s history: one relates to the building’s age, the other to the course of a former military road.

The Magnifica Corte di Caldonazzo is a castle also known locally as Castel Trapp or Castello di Caldonazzo. When the Castello di Caldonazzo was destroyed by the army of the Scaliger family in 1385, the so-called Torre dei Sicconi remained standing. A botanical garden was created around the still-visible remains of the tower, and it can be reached from Caldonazzo by a pleasant walk. Check the garden’s current accessibility before visiting.

Art, Events and Local Identity

LakeART offers a contemporary perspective. The project brings together the natural beauty of Valsugana and contemporary art, inviting visitors to experience Lake Caldonazzo and Lake Levico along an experiential route following the cycling and walking path. Guided tours and QR codes provide further insight into the artistic and natural-history aspects. Unlike the churches and historical remains, the focus here is on the connection between landscape and contemporary art.

The Magnifica Corte Trapp hosts events, including the Mercatino dei Rigattieri Tirolesi in spring and the Rassegna di Canti Spirituals in summer. If you want to include one of these events in your travel plans, check the specific dates.

Another local feature is Mais Spin di Caldonazzo, an old local variety of maize from Trentino. It adds an agricultural dimension to the landscape and cultural themes. In Caldonazzo, as well as the lake, historic buildings and art, you will find links to local agriculture.
