Discover Erp on walks and hikes, and through its local history. The trails offer different experiences: some pass historical sites in the town centre, while others combine nature with places of remembrance. The Aa and its natural riverbanks are also part of the town’s character. If you’re looking for a hotel in Erp, your planned outings can help guide your trip.

Hiking trails with different themes

The Erp historical walking route is about 3 kilometres long and brings the town’s history to life along the way. Twenty-two attention stones stand in the streets of the town centre, together telling the story of Erp. The route combines a manageable distance with historical sites in town.

The 8.5-kilometre “Oorlog in Het Hurkske” hike offers a different perspective. It passes through the Het Hurkske nature reserve and visits places that recall the Second World War. The nature reserve covers 180 hectares and is located near Erp. Compared with the Erp historical walking route, this longer trail focuses not only on the landscape but also, in particular, on remembrance.

The Ommetje Hurkske circular route is fully wheelchair accessible. This information applies to this route; it does not automatically describe other trails in the area. Another option is the Langs de Brabantse Aa route, which runs from Erp to Veghel. It passes through places of interest featuring nature and history. As practical route information can change, it is advisable to check the latest details before setting out.

The banks of the Aa and green spaces

The river Aa flows through Erp. Its natural banks are suitable for walks and bike rides, offering a way to combine exercise with views of the landscape. Het Hurkske adds a larger nature reserve to the surrounding scenery and is also part of the “Oorlog in Het Hurkske” route.

Molenpark Erp has a circular meeting place with benches on the foundations of a Dutch windmill that was demolished in 1959. The park is a green space on a former factory site. Here, a present-day place to relax sits alongside traces of earlier use, without requiring a longer hike.

Church, town hall and local heritage

Erp’s town hall was designed by Hendrik Verhees (1744–1813). Another notable landmark in the town’s history is Sint-Servatiuskerk: the present church was built on the same site in 1843 in the Neo-Renaissance style. A stone building with a bell tower already stood there in the 14th century. The old bells, Maria and Katrina, date from 1381 and 1412 respectively.

Local heritage is also showcased at Heemkamer Erpethe. It archives and displays heritage in the attic of the town hall; its display cases feature finds discovered in and around Erp. Heemkundekring Erthepe collects documents and small objects that reflect the former lives and living conditions of the town’s residents. The collections can be viewed during town hall opening hours or by appointment. It is best to arrange your visit in advance, as visitor arrangements may change.

The town’s industrial history can also be seen at specific sites. In 1898, Janus Steenbakkers founded the De Meibloem brewery in the left-hand part of a listed building. A 12-metre-high factory chimney at the rear commemorates the brewery. The St. Jozef steam dairy was established in 1916 through the merger of two small dairies: St. Isidorus in Oudveld and a dairy in Boerdonk. It closed in 1955.

Local places and flavours

For a culinary break, Lazzarella in Erp serves Neapolitan pizza in an AVPN-certified pizzeria and has an Italian mercato with delicacies. It also offers pizza and pasta workshops. Check in advance whether a workshop is available on the date of your visit. Siebes Kaas runs a farm shop in Erp selling its own locally produced farm cheese; here, too, it is a good idea to check visiting options before setting off.

You can easily choose what to explore based on your interests: the shorter historical walking route passes through the town centre, while the longer trail combines nature with places of remembrance. The banks of the Aa, Molenpark and local businesses add further options to your plans. This lets you shape your stay in Erp around local history, exercise and regional experiences.
