Dussen can be explored through a variety of themes: Kasteel Dussen and the Noordeveldse Molen represent architectural and milling history, while the Kornsche Boezem offers scenery and nature. There are also walking and cycling routes, traditional wooden-clog making and products from the region. When choosing a hotel in Dussen, you can consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.

Kasteel Dussen and the History of the Mills

Kasteel Dussen has a castle garden and a Tuscan colonnade dating from the 16th century in its courtyard. The colonnade can still be visited. The garden and colonnade give the visit distinct architectural and scenic highlights. Guided tours last about an hour; you can also explore the castle on your own. Check the current visitor arrangements before you travel.

The Noordeveldse Molen offers a different historical perspective. The polder mill was built in 1795 and is the last surviving one of seven polder mills that drained the polder near Dussen from 1470 onwards. Its history combines a specific construction date with the mills’ former role in draining the polder. While Kasteel Dussen is distinguished by its castle garden and colonnade, the focus at the Noordeveldse Molen is on milling history.

Walks and Scenery

The Kornsche Boezem covers 42 hectares. Its landscape includes old pollard willows and wet hay meadows. Special plant species grow there, including water soldiers, marsh marigolds and marsh lousewort. Those interested in the area’s nature will find specific features to look out for.

The “Rondje Dussen” walking route takes walkers along the Bergsche Maas and through the Kornsche Boezem. Its course thus connects two distinct landscapes: the Maas and the nature reserve with its willows, hay meadows and plant species. For planning a walk, this route offers a different way to experience Dussen than the 36-kilometre Fietsroute door Het land van Altena. It starts in Dussen and passes through, among other places, Hank, Nieuwendijk, Werkendam and Almkerk. The routes differ mainly in their mode of travel and course: a circular walking route along the Maas and through the Kornsche Boezem, or a longer cycle tour through several of the named towns.
