On Ono Island, boat access and the choice of activities are closely linked to travel planning: there are no roads on the island, and access is by boat only. The boat ride from Kadavu Airport to Oneta takes about an hour. It crosses the Kadavu Passage and goes around the west side of Ono Island; the journey time may vary depending on the weather. When looking for a hotel for your stay, you can factor in this boat-only journey as part of your planning.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Kavala Bay is the closest ferry stop to Ono Island; ferry service runs weekly. Check current departure times before travelling. The boat ride from Kadavu Airport to Oneta is a separate route: it is estimated to take an hour, though this may vary with the weather.

Village History and Paths at Oneta Beach

The old village of Koromakawa lies on the north side of Oneta Beach. Behind the beach, Oneta Resort maintains paths along the ridge that lead to a neighbouring beach. As conditions on the paths depend on the weather, check conditions before setting out. Another hike crosses the uninhabited island of Vatulutu, off Ono. The more challenging route takes three hours, providing a clear timeframe for planning.

Reefs and Marine Life

In Kadavu Province, the Great Astrolabe Reef protects the islands; its arc extends beyond Ono towards Buliya Island. Kadavu is an archipelago that includes Ono, Buliya, Yaukuve and other islands, many of them uninhabited. Snorkelling at the Great Astrolabe Reef around Ono offers extensive coral gardens and abundant fish. Directly south of Ono lies the Naqoro Passage, a breeding ground for numerous large billfish species, sharks, tuna, Giant Trevally, Mahi-Mahi and snapper.

The Yavusa Ulunikoro Marine Conservation Area is also part of Ono’s landscape: it is managed by Waisomo village and includes blue-hole and back-reef habitats. North of Ono lies the uninhabited Yabu Island. It is home to one of Fiji’s largest gannet colonies; locally, the island is known as “Birdland” because of its breeding seabirds.

Snorkelling, Diving and Fishing

Oneta Resort has mapped more than 40 dive sites on the Great Astrolabe Reef. Which sites can be visited depends on conditions. A manta ray cleaning station is about a three-minute boat ride from the resort’s dive centre; this is an approximate journey time, and conditions and timing may vary. Manta rays gather daily at Vuro Island from May to the end of November. This period is a general guide; sightings are not guaranteed.

Oneta also offers sport fishing on the Great Astrolabe Reef around Ono Island and Kadavu. The methods listed include popping, stickbaits, jigging and trawling. These specific activities help you assess reef and fishing interests without conflating the different locations or conditions.

Water Tours

Oneta offers guided outrigger canoe tours around Ono. They are weather-dependent, and participants must pass a capsize test. A four-day sea kayaking programme includes circumnavigating Ono Island, with stops at beaches for swimming, snorkelling and a picnic. The sea kayaking leg takes five to six hours; a motorboat can be used to shorten the paddling distance. The tours therefore differ in both duration and stated requirements.
