Wąbrzeźno County: Lakes, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Wąbrzeźno County
Wąbrzeźno County combines lakes, forests and trails with buildings from different periods. There are specific differences to consider when planning your trip: a large glacial lake with a sandy beach, various lakeside towns, separate hiking and cycling routes, and historic buildings in Dębowa Łąka and Orłowo. This lets you organize nature and cultural destinations around the themes that interest you during your stay.
Forests and protected landscapes
Forests cover about 8.4 percent of Wąbrzeźno County. Mixed and pine forests predominate, with Scots pine making up the largest share. The forests provide residents and tourists with opportunities for recreation and leisure; walkers and cyclists are among the visitors. The protected Zgniłka–Wieczno–Wronie Landscape Protection Area covers 1,324 hectares. The forested areas and designated protected area thus offer different ways to enjoy a nature-focused stay.
Lakes, beaches and designated bathing areas
Jezioro Wieczno Północne is a natural glacial lake covering 347 hectares. The lake is characterized by a wide sandy beach and clear water. The beach in Ostrowo has a playground and an outdoor fitness area. If you plan to use these facilities, check locally before your trip.
Jezioro Wieldządzkie has facilities for anglers and a boat launch. Separately, the beach at the lake in Wieldządz has a beach volleyball court, a playground and a parking lot. Designated bathing areas are located in Wąbrzeźno and Przydwórz Ostrowo. If you plan to swim there, check in advance whether the relevant area will be accessible on your travel dates.
Comparing hiking and cycling routes
The green KP-4077-z hiking trail is about 52 kilometers long and passes through Wąbrzeźno. A separate cycling route is also 52 kilometers long and runs from Brodnica through Bobrowo, Lembarg, Brudzawy, Osieczek, Dębowa Łąka, Łobdowo, Kurkocin, Wielkie Radowiska and Niedźwiedź to Wąbrzeźno. The similar distances therefore refer to different routes and ways of getting around: a hiking trail in one case, and a cycling route with its own itinerary in the other.
Another route for hiking and cycling runs from the beach in Ostrowo, on Jezioro Wieczno Północne, to Płużnica. It follows a former railway line that once connected Chełmża and Mełno. Within the municipality, this former rail connection ran through, among other places, Orłowo, Płużnica, Wieldządz and Mgowo. Check the signage and trail conditions locally when planning your specific trip.
The Szlak Zamków Ziemi Chełmińskiej also passes through Wąbrzeźno. The route is 282 kilometers long and provides another point of reference for planning your trip. The name refers to a route through the Chełmno Land; when choosing individual stages, you can take its length and the section through Wąbrzeźno into account.
Getting there and historic buildings
The double-track, electrified railway line No. 353 runs from Poznań Wschód to Skandawa and is used for passenger and freight traffic. In the county, passenger services stop at the stations in Wąbrzeźno and Książki, as well as at the Zieleń stop. If you plan to use the train to get there or for individual stages of your trip, check the timetable for your travel day.
The Gothic Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Dębowa Łąka is a 14th-century building made of brick and fieldstone. Orłowo is home to a palace and park complex dating from the 18th century, with a Neo-Baroque palace and a landscape park. The two places represent different cultural themes: a medieval church building and a palace with its park.
