Zagórze lies on the western edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura. Protected landscapes, trails and historic sites shape different aspects of this destination. When choosing what to explore, you can decide whether you are more interested in nature and geology, walking or cycling routes, or religious and archaeological history.

The Natural Landscape of Bukowica and Małe Gaje

Part of the village district (sołectwo) of Zagórze lies within Tenczyński Landscape Park; the Bukowica Nature Reserve is located within the protected area. Carpathian beech forest with old beech trees grows there. A rock exposure of Triassic limestone, several metres long, adds a geological feature to this forest setting. Thus, old beech trees and a limestone exposure stand side by side as distinct natural features of Bukowica.

Another landscape feature is the loess ravine “Małe Gaje” on the slopes of the Garb Tęczyński in the northern part of Zagórze. Unlike Bukowica’s forest and rock features, it is a ravine within the local landscape. When sorting through the destination’s natural attractions, you can therefore distinguish between the nature reserve and this northern landscape feature.

Walking, Cycling and Pilgrimage Routes

The yellow “im. JP II” Jura Valleys Walking Trail passes through Zagórze and the Bukowica Nature Reserve. The blue circular route in the Babice area also passes through Zagórze and is a cycling route. This gives you two routes with different focuses: a walking route and a circular cycling route. The blue circular route is also described in relation to the Babice area, while the yellow trail is named in connection with Zagórze and Bukowica.

The “Szlak Miejsc Papieskich na Ziemi Chrzanowskiej” (Trail of Papal Sites in the Chrzanów Region) also passes through Zagórze. It adds a pilgrimage and memorial route to the walking and cycling routes. The names help you distinguish the routes by their character: walking on the yellow Jura Valleys Walking Trail, cycling on the blue circular route and religious remembrance on the Szlak Miejsc Papieskich.

Chapels and Earlier History

The historic Chapel of Our Lady of the Nursing Breast dates from the early 19th century and is listed in the municipal heritage register. Numerous religious ceremonies were held there, including some attended by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła. The chapel brings together architectural history, heritage status and religious use.

Another chapel is located in Zagórze-Góry. It commemorates Cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s visit to Zagórze. At this site, the focus is on remembering a visit; the Chapel of Our Lady of the Nursing Breast, by contrast, is associated with its early construction date and the ceremonies held there. This distinction gives each chapel its own role in the area’s religious history.

“Grodzisko Duże” adds an archaeological perspective to these themes of remembrance. The site is dated to the 7th–11th centuries and features surviving fragments of a fortification. This dating refers to a period of time and should therefore be read differently from the specific construction date of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Nursing Breast. Zagórze also has a fishing pond.
