Discover Wieluń
Accommodation in Wieluń
If you’re looking for a hotel in Wieluń, it’s worth exploring the town’s historical highlights: its defensive walls, the Collegiate Church of Corpus Christi and the collections of the Muzeum Ziemi Wieluńskiej. They span the development of the town walls, archaeological finds and exhibitions. Before booking, you can consider which aspects of Wieluń you’d like to shape your stay most.
Wieluń’s fortification history
Wieluń’s defensive walls were about 1,200 to 1,300 metres long and enclosed the 12-hectare Old Town. The two measurements describe different aspects of the fortifications: the length of the walls and the area of the enclosed old town. In the time of Casimir the Great, Wieluń was one of 25 towns surrounded by defensive walls.
The fortifications were built after the town fire of 1335, gradually replacing the wooden earthworks. The walls were made of local sandstone, with a brick crenellated top. Originally, the complex had no bastions, only two gates: the Kalisz Gate and the Kraków Gate. The sequence of construction, materials and gates each offer a different insight into the historic fortifications.
Church and collections
The Collegiate Church of Corpus Christi, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Consolation, is part of the town’s religious history. It is a church in Wieluń and a collegiate church of the chapter of canons at the sanctuary.
An exhibition space at the Muzeum Ziemi Wieluńskiej displays finds from the period of Roman influence, including terra sigillata and Roman coins. The finds are associated with the Przeworsk culture; the period spans from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. These archaeological collections add a much longer historical perspective to the themes of the town fortifications and the church.
The collection of the Muzeum Ziemi Wieluńskiej also includes the grave goods of a blacksmith and goldsmith, with metalworking tools. Numerous iron objects illustrate everyday life and warfare. Reconstructions of weapons and dwellings from the respective periods complement the collection. Archaeological finds are thus presented alongside informative reconstructions, while the objects themselves represent different aspects of life at the time.
Exhibitions in the Baszta Męczarnia
The exhibition “W izbie wieluńskiego kata” explores the history of Wieluń’s executioners and their work. The objects on display include executioners’ clothing, equipment and typical instruments of torture. Another exhibition, “Dzieje oręża w średniowieczu i w okresie staropolskim,” focuses on the town’s defensive role and the participation of Wieluń’s residents in armed conflicts from the town’s beginnings through the 17th century. The two exhibitions have different focuses: one covers the history and work of the executioners, the other weapons and the history of defence.
In the multimedia section of the exhibition “Dotknij historii Wielunia,” an animated legend about Prince Władysław Odonic’s hunt is also presented in 3D. If you plan to see this presentation, check current access arrangements with the museum before your visit.
