Łuzki: Wooden Church, Organ and Regional History
Accommodation in Łuzki
Łuzki first draws attention to a wooden church with a history of construction, altars and an organ. The wider regional setting can also be explored through nature, outdoor activities and history, particularly in the Łosice area.
Wooden Church: Construction History and Furnishings
The Roman Catholic wooden church in Łuzki, dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was begun in 1936 as a half-timbered building and consecrated on 5 June 1938. It is listed in the national register of monuments. The building is clad in boards both inside and out; its original shingle roof is now covered with galvanized sheet metal. The construction method and the later roofing thus represent two clearly distinct stages.
The artworks include a gilded oak main altar made in 1958, with an image of the Virgin Mary, and a painting of the Transfiguration of Christ that covers the main altar. The painting is attributed to Ignacy Pieńkowski, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. In 1963, bronze crowns were placed on the figures of Jesus and Mary. Two oak side altars were designed by architect Ryszard Grabowski; their paintings, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Joseph, are by Zofia Grabska.
The organ also adds to the picture of the interior: it was built in 1973 by the Włodzimierz Truszczyński company and funded by Father Marian Bujno. It stands in the choir loft opposite the main altar and has ten stops, arranged across two manuals and a pedal. Alongside the sacred art, it offers the history of a specific instrument and its technical configuration.
Outdoor Activities and Water in the Łosice Area
In the Łosice area, the Łosice Reservoir area complements the cultural focus with outdoor activities. It has a walking and cycling path, a small beach, a floating platform, an outdoor fitness area, a children’s paddling pool and a water-environment education trail. Leisure activities also include Nordic walking, walking, running, outdoor exercise and swimming. Kayak and pedal boat rentals are available seasonally. You should therefore plan for boat rentals as a seasonal offering.
Landscape and History of the Wider Region
In the wider Bug Valley, the landscape is shaped by glacial moraine hills and meandering rivers. It also features forests, gravel soils, nature reserves and the Podlasie Bug Gorge Landscape Park. In the wider Łosice area, historical and natural attractions, a peaceful rural setting and developing agritourism add to this landscape. Thus, alongside the church’s artworks, nature and rural character are independent reasons to visit.
Historical collections are also part of the wider regional picture. The Waldemar Kosieradzki Museum of History and Tradition in Łosice includes an exhibition on the “Zenon” unit of the 34th Home Army Infantry Regiment, with 128 photographs from the Second World War. The National Memorial Room in Niemojki brings together archaeological, ethnographic, historical and biographical collections, including local folk culture and material about the Home Army. The collection comprises approximately 1,500 to 2,000 objects.
