Discover Plaska: Cycling and Ski Trail, Lakes and Local History
Accommodation in Plaska
Plaska offers several distinct points of reference for planning a trip: a paved cycling and ski trail, lakes, a beach at Paniewo, and local information at the Tourist Information Centre. Depending on whether you want to focus on cycling, cross-country skiing in winter, places by the water or local history, different factors may influence your choice of where to stay. The information centre also provides information about local accommodation.
Cycling and Ski Trail in Plaska
The cycling and ski trail begins beside the Tourist Information Centre and sports stadium in Plaska. The cycle path is paved and also forms part of the Green Velo Eastern Cycling Trail. Its starting point and connection to Green Velo provide two specific points of reference for planning your trip along the route.
In the municipality, the trail section is used for cross-country skiing in winter. Cross-country skis can be rented at the Tourist Information Centre. If you plan to rent skis during your visit, check availability in advance. This lets you take the trail’s winter use and ski rental into account as two separate planning points.
In the municipality of Plaska, the trail ends at the tenth lock on the Augustów Canal, called Perkuć. The Perkuć nature reserve is also connected to the trail. It was established in 1970 to protect an old-growth pine and spruce forest typical of the Augustowska Forest. At lakes Paniewo and Krzywe, the trail includes a loop with a shelter and barbecue facilities at each lake within the municipality. In the municipality, it also passes the famous Dowgirda Bridge. A scene from the TV series “Czarne chmury” was filmed at this bridge.
Lakes and Beach
The small ribbon lake Gorczyckie lies on the boundary between the villages of Plaska and Gorczyca. It is also part of the Augustów Canal water system. Both its location between the two villages and its connection to the canal system are useful points of reference.
At Lake Paniewo, Plaska has a beach with piers and barbecue shelters. This is distinct from the trail sections at lakes Paniewo and Krzywe: there, the cycling and ski trail includes a loop with a barbecue shelter at each lake within the municipality. The beach and the loop sections are therefore described as different points of reference for your stay.
Local Information
The Tourist Information Centre in Plaska provides information about local accommodation. Tourist maps and guidebooks are also available there. If you would like to use these materials for planning, check before your trip whether they will be available on the day of your visit.
Food and drinks are available at the Bike Bar café in the information centre. Check in advance whether it will be open during your visit. Next to the information centre is a sports complex with football and volleyball courts, a tennis court, a fitness room and a sauna.
The different information available locally can help with different questions: the information centre provides details about accommodation, while the maps and guidebooks listed above are useful for finding your way around the area. The sports complex is next door; its facilities include several sports options, as well as a fitness room and sauna.
A Place with History
Plaska developed on the site of an earlier settlement of woodcutters. This origin adds a historical dimension to the area’s present-day points of reference along the trail and by the water. Together, these offer different themes to help you decide whether Plaska is right for your trip.
