Bielsk Podlaski: Discover Culture and History
Accommodation in Bielsk Podlaski
Bielsk Podlaski offers a range of cultural points of interest for a trip: a museum with ethnographic textile collections, listed buildings, and a medieval fortified settlement. Discussion sessions and an outdoor museum event add to the historical themes. Each place and format has its own focus.
Ethnographic Collections in the Town Hall
The Muzeum Obojga Narodów w Bielsku Podlaskim has been housed in the town hall since 1984. The museum’s address is Town Hall, ul. Mickiewicza 45, 17-100 Bielsk Podlaski. Its extensive ethnographic collection includes skirts, shirts, tablecloths, bedspreads, braids, and tapestries from the area around Bielsk Podlaski. Its regional reach therefore extends beyond the town itself.
A distinctive feature of the museum is its collection of folk towels. It was assembled through many years of research and fieldwork in Bielsk County. The collection’s history is therefore also part of its profile: the towels were not simply gathered as objects, but documented as part of long-term field research. This adds a specific connection to the study of the region to the broad selection of textile types.
The museum offers workshops and museum lessons for all age groups. For your trip planning, educational programs and different event formats are also worth considering, alongside the collections. The collections focus on ethnographic textiles, while workshops and museum lessons form a separate part of the museum’s offerings.
Listed Wooden and Brick Buildings
The spacious, listed wooden house at ul. Dubicze 20 was built at the end of the 18th century. Another listed building is the Orthodox Church of the Resurrection at ul. Traugutta 5. It is a wooden and brick church dating from the 18th to 19th centuries. The two examples therefore differ both in construction and in date: the house is dated to the end of the 18th century, while the church spans two centuries.
Góra Zamkowa is also one of Bielsk Podlaski’s historic sites. The medieval fortified settlement is located in the northeastern part of a park in the town. Unlike the house and the church, it is a fortified site from the Middle Ages. The places described thus include both a medieval fortification and buildings dating from the 18th to 19th centuries.
Discussion Sessions and an Outdoor Event
Since 2022, quarterly discussion sessions titled “Sejmiki Bielskie” have been held at the Muzeum Obojga Narodów. They present research findings and explore questions about the history of Podlachia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The format combines discussion with the presentation of research findings, giving it a different focus from the museum’s collections.
Since 2021, the museum has also organized the outdoor event “Dni Tradycji Obojga Narodów.” It presents the history and culture of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The two series differ in format: the Sejmiki Bielskie focus on discussion and research, while Dni Tradycji is an outdoor event presenting history and culture. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates in advance.
