Starzno offers several points of interest to consider when planning a stay: St. Nicholas Church, with its history of construction and furnishings; wooden houses more than a hundred years old; a glacial erratic; and two routes that pass through the town. This brings together cultural and historical details with practical ways to include hiking or cycling in your travel plans.

St. Nicholas Church: History of Construction and Furnishings

St. Nicholas Church dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. It was built on the site of an earlier church, dating from the time when this area belonged to the Pomerelian princes. This means the history of the church site goes back further than the date of the present building.

The church has a wooden log construction. On the west side stands a post-and-beam tower with an onion-shaped cupola. The building has a single nave and a gabled roof covered with wooden shingles. Log construction and post-and-beam construction are different building methods: in log construction, wooden elements are stacked to form the walls; in post-and-beam construction, posts form the supporting frame. In Starzno, the two terms refer to different parts of the church.

The furnishings also include pieces from different periods. Two bells date from 1648 and 1824. The late Baroque high altar dates from the late 17th century and is decorated with rich acanthus ornament; it includes two paintings on leather. Other furnishings include a chalice-shaped baptismal font with a lid from the first half of the 18th century, a late Baroque pulpit, and a crucifix from around the turn of the 19th century.

Wooden Houses and Glacial Erratic

Several wooden houses more than a hundred years old have been preserved in Starzno. Alongside the church’s different timber construction methods, they offer another glimpse of the town’s historic buildings. There is also a glacial erratic in Starzno. This lets you distinguish between historic buildings and a natural landmark as you find your way around.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The yellow-marked hiking trail runs through the Brda Valley from Miastko to Przechlewo, passing through Starzno and Nowa Brda. Both its course through the valley and the towns named along the way are useful for getting your bearings.

The Szafirowy Szlak is a 26 km cycling route. It passes through Dymin, Dźwierzno, Starzno, and Ostrówek and is classified as moderately difficult. The attractions along the Szafirowy Szlak include Lake Starzeńskie. The route runs on cobblestones, asphalt, unpaved roads, and concrete slabs.

The two routes therefore differ in activity and description: the yellow-marked trail is a hiking route in the Brda Valley, while the Szafirowy Szlak is described as a cycling route with its length, difficulty, and surfaces also specified. These details offer different points of reference if you want to include the routes in your travel plans.
