Ryjewo – Churches, Trails and History
Accommodation in Ryjewo
If you are looking for a hotel in Ryjewo, the churches, the former Protestant cemetery, and the forest and lakeside trails offer a concrete impression of the town’s different themes. Architectural and church history sit alongside natural landscapes and trails, so you can weigh up which aspects will shape your stay.
Churches: Architectural History and Religious Tradition
The Church of the Holy Family is Neo-Gothic and was built in 1908–1909. It was declared a sanctuary in 1934 and established as a sanctuary again in 1987. Every year, on the first Sunday after August 15, a plenary indulgence celebration in honor of the Holy Family is held here. Pilgrims come from nearby towns to attend.
From the hill by the Church of the Holy Family, you can see the Vistula Valley, the surrounding forests, and Gniew Castle. The church, together with its cemetery, rectory, and adjoining green space, is listed in the register of monuments of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. The listing is number 333/94 and dated 11 February 1994.
The Church of “Blessed Michał Kozal” offers another historical perspective. It was built in 1895 for the local Protestant congregation and rebuilt in 1988–1991. Today it serves Catholics and the parish of “Blessed Michał Kozal.” Its listing in the register of monuments of the Pomeranian Voivodeship is number 131/89.
A Former Cemetery Marked by Different Periods
The former Protestant cemetery, dating from the first half of the 19th century, is on Grunwaldzka Street, behind building No. 100. Its sections point to different dates of origin: the western section was established around the middle of the 19th century, and the eastern one around 1895. The cemetery has been restored in recent years and is maintained on an ongoing basis.
Forest Trail, Stream, and Views of the Vistula Valley
The Ryjewo Trail runs alongside a small lake at the entrance to the town from the direction of Sztum. Through the forest, it follows a stream that flows into the small lake. Walkers can use seating areas and several bridges over the stream. The trees also define this trail: nearly all coniferous and deciduous tree species found in Poland grow here, and some of the oaks are natural monuments.
The view from the hill by the Church of the Holy Family and the forest section of the Ryjewo Trail offer different landscapes: the Vistula Valley, surrounding forests, and Gniew Castle in one spot; the stream and the tree species along the trail in another. In Ryjewo, a scenic viewpoint and a walk through the forest are different options to enjoy.
Three Routes with Different Connections to the Area
The Green Cycle Trail in the Ryjewo municipality is 44 km long and begins and ends in Ryjewo. The 118.1 km Kopernikowski Trail passes through the town between Biała Góra and Kwidzyn. A 23 km loop runs from Ryjewo via Jałowiec, Mątowskie Pastwiska, Benowo, the Benowo forester’s lodge, the Swedish earthworks, the Sarnowo forester’s lodge, and Borowiec, before returning to Ryjewo.
The three routes differ both in length and in their connection to the town: the Green Cycle Trail and the loop begin and end in Ryjewo, while the Kopernikowski Trail passes through Ryjewo between two other named places. Choosing a route lets you decide between a 23 km loop, the 44 km cycle trail, and the considerably longer trail.
