Ząbrowo combines traces of former village and farm uses with a kayak landing and a cycle route connection. If you are considering the village as a travel destination, you can weigh up two different focuses: historic buildings or activities on the water and by bicycle. The village’s history includes specific former functions; leisure and water tourism infrastructure adds another perspective.

Historic Buildings and Former Uses

The 2021 municipal planning study describes the building at Ząbrowo 11A as a former village school complex, or elementary school, with classrooms and a kitchen. The same study dates the building to 1934. The farmstead at Ząbrowo 26 represents a different building type: it is a long, linear farmstead dating to 1899. The term highlights the elongated layout of the farmstead as its defining feature and provides a concrete comparison with the former school use.

At addresses 15 and 21, former functions and changes of use are the main focus. The building at Ząbrowo 15 was a barn on Albert Reihs’s large farm and was converted for residential use. The building at Ząbrowo 21 formerly housed the Haase/Janke general store; its former use combined residential and commercial functions. A residential building at Ząbrowo 45 dates from around 1890. This makes it possible to distinguish between farm, commercial and residential uses.

In the immediate vicinity of the destination, the building at Ząbrowo 30 is identified as the former manor house of a Chełmno-region estate. Before 1945, it was the residence of the Reihs family, the wealthiest family in the surrounding area; it dates from around 1890. There is also a house chapel near Ząbrowo 30, which was associated with Albert Reihs’s house before 1945. It dates from the late 19th century and is now a public building.

The dates allow for a chronological comparison: the residential building at Ząbrowo 45 and the former manor house date from around 1890, the long farmstead dates to 1899, and the former school to 1934. This places several examples from the late 19th century alongside a building from the 20th century.

Cycle Route and Kayak Landing

One of the kayak landings on the international E-70 waterway on the Nogat River is located in Ząbrowo. It was created as part of the “Pomorskie Szlaki Kajakowe” project and is intended for leisure and water tourism associated with the Nogat. Its role is therefore clearly focused on water activities.

The municipality’s existing cycle route network includes the Stare Pole–Ząbrowo connection. It offers a different focus for activities than the kayak landing: here, a cycle route connects two named places, while there, water tourism on the Nogat takes centre stage. If you are planning a specific cycling trip, it is a good idea to check the latest information about route conditions in advance.
