Rydułtowy brings together striking traces of its industrial and mining history, memorial sites, a geological exposure, and opportunities for activity and relaxation. The attractions offer different highlights for your stay, from the railway tunnel and graduation tower to Skałka. If you are looking for a hotel in Rydułtowy, it helps to think ahead about which themes matter most for your trip.

Industrial and mining history

The railway tunnel in Rydułtowy is considered the oldest railway tunnel in Poland and the longest tunnel in Silesia. It is 727 metres long. For your information, the tunnel is closed to pedestrians, while rail traffic continues. The 50-metre-long Ścieżka Powstań Śląskich (Silesian Uprisings Path) runs above the tunnel. Its three wings commemorate the Silesian Uprisings of 1919, 1920 and 1921.

Several multi-storey brick family houses known as familoki have been preserved from the workers’ colony “Karol” or “Karola”, popularly called “Karlik”. They stand between Bema and Strzelców Bytomskich streets, north of the city centre. Buildings from old mine shafts have also been preserved in Rydułtowy and the surrounding area.

The Leon III shaft site includes a modern shooting range for firearms, operating in a former underground training gallery. It is another tangible trace of local mining history, but differs significantly from the memorial sites and architectural relics.

Church and memorial sites

The present-day Church of St George is a large Neo-Gothic building consecrated in December 1896. The penitential cross stands beside the church. It is considered Poland’s only double-barred penitential cross and the tallest penitential cross in the Silesian Voivodeship. Its shape is also known as a Bożogrobcy or Miechowici cross, or a Caravaca cross.

The Dembczyk Monument stands exactly where the insurgent Jerzy Dembczyk died. All official state, regional and local commemorations take place at the Monument to the Struggle and Victory. The two sites commemorate history in different ways: one marks the precise place of a death, while the other is used for collective memorial events.

The Zabudowania KWK “Rydułtowy” complex includes a memorial room in a historic, century-old building that once housed the small-property weigh station. There is a memorial park at the Evangelical-Augsburg cemetery. Its central monument is made from salvaged gravestones and other preserved remains.

Geology, relaxation and activity

Skałka is legally protected as a geological documentation site. The exposure reveals Carboniferous sandstones of the paralic series and is one of the few well-preserved exposures of Carboniferous sandstone in the Silesian Voivodeship. A walking route leads to the site, which offers easy access for geological observation.

The graduation tower is a municipal wellness and recreation facility with a saline microclimate. You can spend time near the tower and rest on wooden loungers. This makes it different from the industrial and geological sites: the focus here is on the microclimate and taking a break.

Rydułtowska Fikołkownia RAFA offers a BMX track, a skatepark and a climbing wall. Sports enthusiasts meet at Staw Machnikowiec for MTB competitions and cross-country races; the pond is also considered a suitable place to relax. Staw Zawalisko can be included in a car, cycling or walking tour through the most scenic surroundings of Rydułtowy.

The Rydułtowski Ośrodek Kulturalno-Oświatowy ROKO brings educational, artistic and recreational activities together in one place. Alongside its historical and natural attractions, Rydułtowy also offers cultural and leisure options to consider when planning your stay.
