Discover the history and nature of Szczekociny
Accommodation in Szczekociny
Explore Szczekociny through several themes: early Neoclassical architecture, sites commemorating Tadeusz Kościuszko, and routes through forest and river landscapes. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Szczekociny, the focus of your planned trip can help you choose: would you like to discover architectural history, follow a historic trail, or explore nature and water-based activities? The sites and routes each offer a different perspective.
Architecture from several centuries
The early Neoclassical palace and park complex dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its layout includes a courtyard of honour, an axially arranged palace, galleries and outbuildings. The axial arrangement and complementary structures give the complex its architectural coherence—so the focus is not only on the palace as a standalone building.
The parish church of St Bartholomew reveals another layer of early Neoclassical history. It was built around 1620 and extensively remodelled in the early Neoclassical style in 1780. The two dates mark different phases: the church originated in the early 17th century, while its extensive Neoclassical remodelling took place in the late 18th century.
Numerous wooden houses dating from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries have also been preserved in Szczekociny. They are located on Śląska, Lelowska, Senatorska and Żeromskiego streets. Historic residential buildings on several streets thus complement the architectural history of the palace complex and the church.
Memorial sites and the Kosynierów Trail
A monument to Tadeusz Kościuszko stands on Tadeusz Kościuszko Square. It was erected in 1917, destroyed during the German occupation and returned to its pedestal in 1945. Its history can thus be read as a sequence of erection, destruction and reinstatement, with the dates kept distinct.
A Baroque statue of St Florian also stands on the square. It features a cartouche, the monogram of Franciszek Dębiński and the date 1762. Its style and date give the square another historical reference alongside the commemoration of Kościuszko.
The 16-kilometre Kosynierów Trail begins at the monument in the market square and ends in front of the church in Moskorzew. This historic and tourist trail commemorates the Battle of Szczekociny, fought by Tadeusz Kościuszko on 6 June 1794. Its starting point in town thus connects with the memory of a specific event in regional history.
Forest, trails and the Pilica
Gąszcze Forest lies within the city limits of Szczekociny and covers 132.24 hectares. It is a legally protected forest with health and recreational functions. This gives the nature theme a clear connection to the town itself.
In the forest near the destination, Gąszcze also has a 4.5-kilometre walking and cycling trail with an environmental education focus. The trail has 11 stations and opened in 2005. Its length and stations set it apart from the Kosynierów Trail, which specifically commemorates a historic event and continues as far as Moskorzew.
A 15-kilometre kayaking trip is described for the Szczekociny–Przyłęk stretch of the Pilica. This offers a paddling route as a distinct travel option alongside the land-based trails. The three routes differ in length, mode of travel and focus: a historic trail, an environmental education walking and cycling trail, or a kayaking trip.
