Zawiercie: River Sources, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Zawiercie
Zawiercie between the upland plateau and river sources
Zawiercie lies on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland along the Warta. Hiking and cycling routes intersect in the city, while natural and cultural attractions are spread across different districts. You can therefore choose different priorities when planning your trip: a hike to the river sources, a route starting at the railway station, or visits to historic and cultural sites.
Hiking and cycling
The Szlak 3 Rzek, or Three Rivers Trail, is a hiking route to the sources of the Warta, Czarna Przemsza and Blanówka in Zawiercie. The first option begins at the railway station and passes through Blanowice, Kromołów and Bzów. This gives you a specific sequence of stops if you want to plan your hike around the places mentioned.
The sources give the route its distinctive focus: one of the main sources of the Warta in the Kromołów district lies beneath the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk. The Czarna Przemsza rises in the Bzów district. Blanówka is also one of the three rivers whose sources the Szlak 3 Rzek visits. The river names help you distinguish the individual stops along the hike.
Hiking and cycling routes intersect in Zawiercie, including the red-marked Szlak Orlich Gniazd and the Szlak Warowni Jurajskich. In Skarżyce, the ruins of Bąkowiec Castle lie beside the red-marked Szlak Orlich Gniazd and the blue-marked Szlak Warowni Jurajskich. If you are interested in trails and historic sites, this is where a route through the landscape meets a specific destination along the way.
Rail connections and places to visit
Zawiercie has direct rail connections to the north, including Warsaw and Gdynia, and to the south, including Kraków, Zakopane, Prague, Budapest and Vienna. Connections also run to Upper and Lower Silesia and eastward, including to Ełk and Suwałki. When planning your journey, you can compare these directions with your destinations and check the latest departure times. The railway station is also the starting point for the first option on the Szlak 3 Rzek.
The Małe Centrum Nauki SOWA (SOWA Science Centre), at ul. 3 Maja 4, is also located in the railway station building. Visitors can explore, discover and experiment independently. At the research stations, they can trigger phenomena, change parameters and test their observations. The exhibits may be touched, and in the Majsternia visitors take on construction challenges. At SOWA, both experimenting at the research stations and hands-on building take centre stage. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
Museums, exhibitions and history
The Miejska Izba Muzealna collects, preserves and displays memorabilia from the Zawiercie region. The Galeria MOK offers a different setting: its two-storey exhibition space is divided into white and black areas. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and industrial design have been exhibited in the rooms of the Galeria Stara Łaźnia im. Leszka Dutki. Together, these places represent different ways of engaging with regional memories and visual art.
The TAZ workers’ housing estate is also part of Zawiercie’s history and is listed in the register of monuments. The plans for its construction included public buildings alongside apartment blocks for workers: a school, a hospital, a doctors’ office with a consulting room, a laundry, bathhouses and a bakery. This description of the plans distinguishes the housing estate from a single building and conveys the scale of the proposed project.
The Kromołów district is also home to a medieval market square, recommended as a point of interest on the local route. Together with the source of the Warta beneath the chapel, it offers another perspective on the district: in addition to its natural features, there is also a historic site to discover.
