Janowo – Culture and Landscape of the Susz Municipality
Accommodation in Janowo
To put your stay into context, it is also worth looking at the Susz municipality, as historic buildings and natural areas are located in several places across the municipality. This gives you two perspectives for planning your trip: the destination of Janowo and the cultural and landscape diversity of the Susz municipality.
Getting your bearings around Janowo
A 6.5-kilometre municipal road runs between Janowo, Bornice and Lubnowy Wielkie. Cultural and natural attractions can also be found in other places within the Susz municipality, extending beyond the three places mentioned. For orientation, it is therefore helpful to distinguish the road information from references to the municipality as a whole.
Historic buildings and places
A notable historic building stands in the village of Bałoszyce in the Susz municipality: a Baroque palace dating from the 17th century. It was later remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style by Karl Otto Magnus von Brünneck, based on a design by architect Luis Runge; the building is surrounded by an extensive park. The palace thus combines Baroque origins with later Neo-Gothic design. The Church of the Holy Family, also dating from the 17th century, is likewise located in Bałoszyce. The palace and church offer two distinct architectural points of interest within the same village.
Other places in the Susz municipality also have historic features. The manor houses in Babięta Wielkie and Nipkowo are considered historically attractive places; the palace ruins in Januszewo are also classified as a historically attractive place. Nearby Janowo, there is a manor park in Lubnowy Małe; there is also a roadside cross there. The manor park and roadside cross are associated with monument status Z-69/2017; the entry is dated 27 September 2017.
The restored palace in Bałoszyce is described as a hotel and restaurant offering services for biological regeneration and an equestrian facility. Before visiting, check whether the listed functions and services are currently available.
Landscape and nature across the municipality
The Susz municipality is located in the Iława Lake District, which is characterised by extensive, dense forests and numerous lakes rich in fish. The municipality is also situated within the Iława Lake District Landscape Park and therefore within the European Natura 2000 ecological network. The Jezioro Gaudy and Jezioro Czerwica nature reserves are located in the municipality; the area along the Liwa is a protected landscape area. The municipality’s natural assets also include rare and endangered plants and numerous animal species, many of which are protected.
These landscape designations complement one another: the landscape park and the Natura 2000 network represent broader contexts, while the two nature reserves and the Liwa offer more specific natural points of interest.
