Dominikowo: Lake, Romanesque Church and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Dominikowo
Dominikowo combines a lakeside setting with a Romanesque fieldstone church and hiking trails through the countryside. The village lies in a picturesque valley by the 78-hectare Dominikowo Duże Lake. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the lakeside scenery and bathing area, the history of the church, or the trails by the lake.
Lake and Landscape
The lake is also known as Dominikowo and Dominikowskie. It covers 78 hectares and is 17 meters deep. These two measurements describe different dimensions: the area indicates its extent, while the depth indicates how deep it is. The Słopica flows through the lake and is only a small stream there. Except for a short stretch near the village, the lake is surrounded by forests. Dominikowo lies in the buffer zone of Drawieński National Park and within the “Dominikowo-Niemieńsko” Protected Landscape Area. The municipal description characterizes the lake as known for its clean, clear water; its size and depth are separate characteristics of the body of water.
On the western shore, a beach lies next to Dominikowo; north of the village’s built-up area are a bathing area and a campsite. In summer, the beach is often visited by residents of Drawno, people from the surrounding area, and tourists.
Romanesque Fieldstone Church
The church in Dominikowo is a Romanesque fieldstone church dating from the early 14th century and dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. “Romanesque” refers to its architectural style, while “fieldstone” refers to its material; the two terms thus describe different aspects of the building. The church was remodeled in the 17th century. Its features include a half-timbered porch and a detached, square bell tower.
The main altar dates from 1610 and is decorated with reliefs. The church also has valuable Mannerist furnishings from the early 17th century. The altar and furnishings therefore belong to the same early-century period and postdate the Romanesque church building. The church’s timeline thus runs from its construction in the early 14th century through its remodeling to the furnishings added in the 17th century.
Hiking Trails by the Lake
The blue P8 hiking trail runs from Nowa Korytnica to Drawno and follows the northern shore of Dominikowo Lake. At the lake, a trail first climbs a high, steep slope and then descends onto a path directly by the water. A hiking trail along the valley, with the picturesque Dominikowo lakes nestled in the forests, offers views of the lakes. At kilometer 11.1, a hiking trail reaches the campsite in Dominikowo. Take the steep climb by the lake into account when choosing your route.
