As a destination, Załom brings together several distinct themes: the woodland landscape of the Załom-Kasztanowe administrative neighbourhood, a protected oak avenue, two marked hiking trails and local history. Precise distinctions are important for understanding the area: the protected-area designation applies to the western part of the administrative neighbourhood, while the blue hiking trail runs through Załom-Kasztanowe. The Szczecin Załom railway stop and the parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord add transport and cultural history to this picture.

Woodland landscape and natural monument

The Załom-Kasztanowe administrative neighbourhood in Szczecin lies on the northeastern edge of the Prawobrzeże district and is surrounded by the forests of Puszcza Goleniowska. The western part of the administrative neighbourhood lies within the “Dolina Dolnej Odry” Natura 2000 site. This protected-area designation therefore applies to a specific part of the area.

Another distinctive natural feature is an avenue of 26 pedunculate oaks (Quercus robur) in the Załom administrative neighbourhood. On 20 June 2005, the Szczecin City Council designated it a protected natural monument. The trees are 20 to 26 metres tall, with circumferences of 123 to 472 centimetres measured at a height of 1.3 metres. These figures show the range within the protected stand and give the avenue a clearly defined profile.

Two hiking trails with different descriptions

The blue-marked Szlak Anny Jagiellonki (ZP-1058-n) is 35.3 kilometres long and runs through the Załom-Kasztanowe administrative neighbourhood. A second route is marked red: the Szlak Rekowski (ZP-1057-c) runs from Szczecin Załom railway station via Szczecin Zdunowo, Niedźwiedź and Szczecin Jezierzyce to Rekowo.

The two trail descriptions provide different points of reference. The total length is given for the Szlak Anny Jagiellonki, while the starting point, intermediate places and destination are named for the Szlak Rekowski. So when comparing the trails for your plans, you can use either the route length or the stated sequence of places as a guide. The specific place names make the red trail’s route especially easy to follow.

Railway stop and local history

Szczecin Załom railway stop has two dead-end platforms, each 200 metres long. The two platforms are a precise infrastructure detail of the stop and add a separate point of reference to the information about the hiking trails.

The local history includes the parish of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Szczecin-Załom. It was established on 25 December 1987. An article published on 31 December 2012 described it as the oldest parish in this part of the city. The founding date and this time-specific description provide a clear historical reference point alongside the landscape and hiking themes.

Szczecin as the wider destination

The wider destination of Szczecin offers its own city and cultural attractions. The Szczecin City Trail is seven kilometres long, connects 42 attractions and points of interest, and starts and ends in front of Szczecin Main Railway Station. Wały Chrobrego offers views of the Oder and the harbour. It is 500 metres long and lies 19 metres above the level of the Oder riverbank.

The Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin is another architectural highlight: its new building is considered a contemporary architectural icon. Tours last about 60 minutes and include the foyer, the Chamber and Symphony Halls, the gallery on the fourth floor, and the souvenir shop. They take place on selected Fridays; dates may change, so check before your visit.

The Museum of Technology and Communication is housed in a historic tram depot dating from 1912 and is one of the largest technical museums in Poland. Its exhibits include trams, buses, cars, motorcycles, bicycles and other technical objects. Along with the city trail and the philharmonic, it complements Załom’s nature and hiking themes with a distinct cultural offering in the wider destination of Szczecin.
