Nawodna lies on the Rurzyca. The historic village layout and the landscape along the slopes give the place two distinct sides: the church and settlement pattern are at the center, while the river, gorges and dry grasslands draw attention to the terrain. If you are looking for a hotel in Nawodna, you can plan your trip around these themes: Would you mainly like to explore the village’s history, or are you more interested in the landscape? The church and the terrain offer different points of interest.

Church and Architectural History

The parish Church of the Holy Cross is a Gothic building dating from the late Middle Ages. Its tower dates from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. To understand the chronology, it is worth distinguishing between the church and the tower: their dates highlight different periods in the building’s history. After a fire in 1964, the church was rebuilt in 1966. The late medieval dating, the tower’s more precise date and the rebuilding after the fire are therefore important milestones in the church’s history. An Old Lutheran chapel is also part of the local architectural history; it was built between 1816 and 1825. Its construction date adds another historical building to the picture.

The churchyard includes a gate and a stone enclosure dating from the 14th or 15th century; they are among its oldest surviving features. This draws attention not only to the church building but also to the churchyard’s historic features. The gate and enclosure have their own dating and provide another way to explore the village’s history beyond the church.

Village Center and Settlement Pattern

Nawodna’s historic settlement is laid out as an oval village. The church stands in the middle of a central, spindle-shaped square. “Oval” describes the layout of the village, while “spindle-shaped” describes the square: the two terms therefore refer to different scales of the settlement’s structure. This is a useful way to understand the village if you want to look beyond individual historic buildings and consider how the place is arranged. The church is thus both a building and part of the traditional settlement pattern.

The Rurzyca, Slopes and Dry Grasslands

The local area includes a section of the slope along the Rurzyca, cut through by numerous dry valleys. Xerothermic dry grasslands grow on the warm, south-facing slopes of the gorges. “Xerothermic” refers to dry, warm conditions, explaining the distinctive character of these slopes. For travelers interested in nature, this offers a specific landscape to explore: alongside the river, Nawodna’s features include the incised valleys and the vegetation on the warm slopes. You can therefore include the landscape and the historic village center as distinct points of interest in your trip planning.
