Koszalin: City history, trails and waterside recreation
Accommodation in Koszalin
Koszalin brings together traces of the city’s history, trails, collections and waterside recreation. For planning purposes, these themes can be distinguished clearly: the Staromiejska tourist route is a city walk that takes you to historic sites and through the city’s history; hiking and cycling trails offer different focuses. Museums and buildings explore different periods, while Wodna Dolina brings together waterside leisure activities. This lets you get to know Koszalin through the themes you want to shape your stay.
City history on foot and by bike
The Staromiejska tourist route is a city walk where visitors can discover historic sites and the history of Koszalin. Koszalińskie Quests offer an additional way to explore the city’s Gothic monuments through puzzles. While the walking route focuses on historic sites and city history, the quests explicitly combine exploration with solving challenges. These are two distinct ways to explore: a walk through historic sites and puzzles about Gothic monuments.
The blue hiking trail “Szlak ‘Porwanego Księcia’” is 12 kilometres long and leads from Koszalin via Sianów to Góra Chełmska. Two other routes are for cycling. The Tychowski Trakt leads from Koszalin via Niekłonice, Świeszyno, Rosnowo, Pobądz and Tyczewo to Tychowo. The Trakt Rybogryfa runs from Koszalin at the foot of Góra Chełmska via Kłos, Węgorzewo and Policko to Dzierżęcino. When choosing between these trails, the mode of transport and the places and routes mentioned for each provide useful points of comparison.
Museums and buildings from different periods
The museum in Koszalin has historical collections documenting the history of Koszalin and its surroundings from the earliest times to the present day. At its main site at ul. Młyńska 37–39, it presents permanent and temporary exhibitions on ethnography, archaeology, history, contemporary art and old art. The collections cover a broad time span; the exhibitions complement them with several academic fields and artistic themes.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built between 1300 and 1333. The Ignacy Jan Paderewski Amphitheatre was built in 1973 as a venue for the Polish Diaspora Choir Festival, which had already been held since 1970. The dates place the two buildings in different historical contexts: the cathedral dates from the Middle Ages, while the amphitheatre was built for a festival that was already established.
In Koszalin, Zagroda Jamneńska offers an educational programme of museum lessons about Jamno’s former inhabitants, their culture and their artistic activities. The programme thus complements the city’s history and art themes with a perspective specifically focused on Jamno.
Water and leisure in Koszalin
Wodna Dolina is a recreation and leisure centre established in 2014 on the Dzierżęcinka River. It includes a city beach and a bathing area that is supervised during the summer season. Wakeboarding with a two-mast lift is available at Wakepark Koszalin in Wodna Dolina; equipment rental and instructor supervision are also offered. Swimming and wakeboarding therefore offer different kinds of recreation, and the bathing area is supervised seasonally.
Książąt Pomorskich “A” Park covers 6.70 hectares and includes a pond and the Dzierżęcinka River, with an area of 1.50 hectares. Another way to explore the surroundings on a ride is the Koszalińska Narrow-Gauge Railway, which runs on a historic narrow-gauge train along the Dzierżęcinka and Lake Lubiatowskie. If you are planning a ride, check the specific departure dates before your trip.
