Żydowo: Lakes, Trails and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Żydowo
Żydowo offers travelers several distinct points of interest: two large lakes, a viewpoint overlooking the power station and valley, named trails, historic architecture and archaeological sites. When planning a stay, it helps to consider your interests: are you especially interested in lakeside scenery and fishing, a route on foot or by bike, or architectural history and archaeology? These themes give Żydowo its distinctive character and can be prioritized in your travel plans according to your preferences.
Lakes, Views and the Power Station
The two large lakes, Kwiecko and Kamienne, are located in the Żydowo village district and are especially popular with tourists and anglers. They offer a clear point of interest if lakeside scenery or fishing is among your travel interests. For a different perspective, visit the viewpoint above the Żydowo pumped-storage power station, near the outlet of the connecting canal to the pipelines. From there, the panorama extends across the power station, Lake Kwiecko and the Radew Valley. Kwiecko is both one of the two lakes in the village district and part of the panorama, so the view brings together a body of water, the facility and the valley.
The Żydowo pumped-storage power station was commissioned in 1971 and is one of the village’s tourist attractions. Its commissioning adds a technological and historical dimension to the landscape views. At a pumped-storage power station, water is pumped uphill to store energy and later released again.
The Half-Timbered Church and Archaeological History
The half-timbered Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1764 and is a listed historic building. Its construction style and precise date of construction offer a clear point of reference for visitors interested in architecture. Another focus of cultural history is the archaeological barrow cemetery. It comprises 22 rectangular and round barrows made of stone and earth, which vary in their state of preservation. The church and the barrow cemetery offer different historical perspectives: one is a listed building with a specific construction date; the other is an archaeological group of 22 mounds whose shapes and states of preservation vary. The “Winniczek” educational site is also one of Żydowo’s tourist attractions.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
There are two distinct trail options for hiking and cycling. The yellow PTTK trail “Łącznikowy Polanów – Żydowo” is numbered ZP-1033-y, marked in yellow with a black border, is 12 kilometers long and runs from Żydowo to Polanów. It is suitable for cycling; a large part of the route follows a paved road. Its length, destination and partly paved surface can help you decide how to fit this route into your travel plans. Another hiking trail, “Wzniesień Moreny Czołowej,” begins or ends in Żydowo.
