Świdwin has a historic heart and a landscape-rich setting. In Świdwin itself, medieval buildings take center stage; in the Gmina Świdwin, lakes, forests and wetlands add to the picture. When planning your trip, you can choose between city history, nature and activities across the wider travel area.

Gothic architecture and medieval traces

The Church of St. Mary in Świdwin remains one of the city’s most important Gothic architectural monuments. The Stone Gate was built in the mid-14th century by the von Wedel family as one of two entrance gates to Świdwin. The origins of the castle date back to the late 13th century. Only a 14-meter-long section of the medieval city walls survives along the Rega. It is made of fieldstones and medieval brickwork in the so-called Wendish bond. The church, gate, castle and fragment of the wall represent different aspects of the city’s history.

An annual tradition is the “Bitwa o krowę” (“Battle for the Cow”), which takes place alternately in Świdwin and Białogard. If you would like to include the event in your trip plans, check the date and venue in advance. An archaeological find also offers a glimpse into the region’s long history: a fragment of elk antler decorated with zigzag engravings and anthropomorphic depictions was discovered near Rusinowo. It has been dated to around 12,900–12,700 years ago and is considered one of the oldest and most valuable prehistoric artworks found in Poland.

Lakes, forests and wetlands

The Gmina Świdwin lies in the Rega Valley, in the central part of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, on the so-called Łobez Upland and close to the Drawsko Lake District. Forests cover 28 percent of its area. They follow the valleys of the Rega and Mołstowa rivers and also occur in scattered stands across the moraine upland. Lakes and ponds cover 1.7 percent of the commune’s area. Wet and marshy depressions around Lakes Oparzno and Bystrzyno Wielkie, as well as the Rusinowo and Klępczewo peat bogs, contain wet forest and alder carr habitats.

Lake Oparzno, near Oparzno, seven kilometers west of Świdwin, is the largest lake in the Gmina Świdwin. Lakes Lekowo Duże and Lekowo Małe near Lekowo are considered attractive to anglers and tourists because of their abundance of fish and the adjoining parkland and forests. The commune’s other lakes and ponds are also described as appealing to anglers.

Nature trail and cultural heritage in the surrounding area

The “Jezioro czapli” nature trail runs along the shore of Lake Oparzno. It is about 1.5 kilometers long and has seven information boards. One board covers nesting grey herons and bitterns. Check the trail’s current condition before visiting.

Historic buildings in nearby Oparzno include a brick church dating from 1729. Its churchyard was established in the early 18th century. Oparzno is also home to a naturalistic-eclectic park dating from 1870. In Lekowo stands the half-timbered Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, built in 1751. Its furnishings include a triptych of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child, dated to 1500; a Baroque chandelier from the 18th century; a Renaissance baptismal font; and patronal pews from the mid-17th century.

Routes and regional orientation

The black-marked “Szlak Dziedzictwa Techniki i Architektury” (Technical and Architectural Heritage Trail) passes through the communes of Świdwin and Brzeżno; its section in Świdwin County is 12.7 kilometers long. For a different kind of excursion, a 147-kilometer lowland kayaking route starts in Cieszeniewo. At the county level, the Rega, Dębica and Mołstowa are also considered attractive waterways for canoeists. These details provide different scales for planning: a marked route through two communes, a long kayaking route starting in Cieszeniewo, and other waterways in the county.

Geography also matters when planning your journey: an important railway line connecting Szczecin and Gdańsk runs through Świdwin County. If you are looking for a hotel in Świdwin, you can choose your destination based on your interest in medieval architecture, the regional landscape or local routes.
