Accommodation in Sitno
In Sitno, you will find a range of things to explore during your stay: a church with several construction phases and distinctive interior features, two nearby lakes, and a cycling route that passes through the village. The history of the “Swojacy” folklore ensemble is also part of the local character.
Church and Local History
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built in 1871 on the site of an older wooden church dating from 1580. The village’s history thus brings together two construction phases at the same location. Over time, Sitno was also called a “spa village” and described as a spa resort.
Inside the church, a Neo-Gothic, hall-like space with a two-bay wooden ceiling has been preserved. Its furnishings include a Neo-Gothic pulpit, Neo-Baroque pews and an organ loft. A bell cast in Bochum in 1873 can also be seen there. The pulpit and pews add distinct accents to the church interior with their different stylistic labels. If you would like to see the interior, check access arrangements in advance.
Twin Lakes at the Foot of a Moraine Hill
Sitno lies at the foot of a moraine hill, near the twin lakes Rybna and Rokitna. Both lakes are 0.5 kilometres long and up to 0.3 kilometres wide. Their surface areas are 10 hectares for Lake Rybna and 9.5 hectares for Lake Rokitna. Their elevations also differ: Rybna is 142.4 metres above sea level, and Rokitna is 143.1 metres.
The figures make for a direct comparison: the lakes are the same length and width, but Rybna is half a hectare larger and lies 0.7 metres lower. This makes it possible to distinguish between the two bodies of water based on specific differences, while keeping their shared location near Sitno in view.
Cycling the “Zaczarowane pejzaże” Route
The approximately 52-kilometre “Zaczarowane pejzaże” cycling route passes through Szczecinek, Świątki, Sitno, Dziki, Turowo, Wilcze Laski, Kruszka, Lotyń, Drzewice, Wojnowo, Dębowo, Drawień, Żółtnica, Buczek and Czarnobór before returning to Szczecinek. Sitno is part of a longer route; the stated distance refers to the entire route.
Another point of reference on the yellow-marked route lies near the destination. At kilometre 6.2, the route turns left at the edge of the “Dęby Wilczkowskie” nature reserve, heading towards Sitno. The turn is beyond a stream that flows into Lake Wilczkowo. If you use these directions to find your way, distinguish between the marked point and the direction: the turn leads towards Sitno; it is not described as a feature within the village.
Folklore and Local History
The “Swojacy” folklore ensemble was formed in 2003 at the initiative of residents of Sitno. It takes part in various folklore competitions and festivals and represents the municipality in Poland and abroad, including in Belarus, Lithuania and Germany.
The ensemble also organises the “Szczecineckie Spotkanie z Folklorem” folklore festival and the “Ludowy Przegląd Kolęd i Pastorałek” folk music competition. If you are interested in either event, check specific dates and venues in advance. The historical descriptions “spa village” and spa resort add another aspect of local history to Sitno’s architectural and cultural heritage.
Nature in the Wider Destination of Szczecinek
In the wider destination of Szczecinek, Bagno Kusowo offers a nature-focused attraction. The raised bog covers about 300 hectares and is described as one of Poland’s largest and best-preserved Baltic raised bogs. The “Wielkie Błoto” nature and forest education trail lies on the southern shore of Lake Wierzchowo, southeast of Wierzchowo. It features five information boards, a wooden walkway across the bog and an observation tower. Check the condition of the facilities locally.
