Medelim – The Village of Balconies
Accommodation in Medelim
Medelim is known as the “aldeia dos balcões” – “Village of Balconies” – because many houses have preserved their balconies. The townscape, historic buildings and local traditions give a trip here a clear cultural focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Medelim, you can first consider whether you mainly want to explore the architecture and local history, or also set aside time for a hike.
Balconies, Manor House and Local History
Casa de Medelim is a small manor house dating from the late 16th century. It houses a museum area dedicated to the architectural heritage of the village and the region. A large balcony with a porch supported by stone columns defines the architecture of Casa da Ti Paróquia. These varied architectural forms give the nickname “Village of Balconies” a concrete connection to the townscape.
The history of the streets and houses is also part of Medelim’s cultural character. Rua da Judiaria recalls the Jewish community that lived there until the 16th century. An annex of the Misericórdia of Medelim served as a hospital. Its archaeological heritage includes a Neocalcolithic dolmen, considered cultural heritage of interest. The Portuguese heritage route Rede das Judiarias de Portugal passes through Medelim; the village also has a connection to Templar heritage.
Traditions of stoneworking and blacksmithing can be seen in stone and ironwork in the village and its surroundings. They add a perspective on local crafts to the historic buildings. For culturally minded travellers, this offers a theme that extends beyond individual buildings to include the materials visible throughout the village.
Religious Buildings and Views
The Capela de SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo, also known as the Capela do EspĂrito Santo, dates from the 17th century. Inside, it preserves a Baroque altar made of polychrome carved wood. The Igreja Matriz is a 19th-century building that was remodelled in the 1960s. Together with the religious heritage tradition of the MisericĂłrdia, these buildings reveal different facets of local history.
The Ermida do Senhor do Calvário was rebuilt in 1736. It should not be confused with Monte do Senhor do Calvário, which offers panoramic views over Medelim and its surroundings. The annual festival at the chapel takes place in the last week of August; the exact dates may vary depending on the programme. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates for that year.
Festivals and Traditional Customs
The Páscoas Judaica e Cristã event recreates old Easter traditions and promotes research into local and regional heritage. The fifth edition of the “Uma Páscoa, Várias Culturas” festival took place in Medelim on 5 and 6 April 2025. These dates refer to that edition and do not indicate future event dates.
The crocheted Christmas tree and nativity scene are also among the festive installations described in the village. In 2025, they were set up for the fifth consecutive year at the roundabout on the main road into the parish. The crocheted tree was seven metres tall, twelve metres in diameter and made from more than 1,200 hand-crocheted squares.
Another local tradition is the Madeiro. Historically, young men dug the Christmas log out of the ground with shovels and pickaxes on the night of 7 December and hauled it around using ropes. The Madeiro was then taken through the village towards the churchyard. An accordion player accompanied the procession, which stopped at the village shops for a drink. This description records the historical form of the tradition.
Hiking and Getting There
The PR7 IDN Rota dos Balcões hiking trail starts in Medelim. It is 17 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and has an estimated duration of five hours. These details help you assess the trail as a distinct part of your trip planning, rather than equating it with a brief look at the townscape. The EN 332 is one of the main road connections to Medelim.
When choosing a destination, you can therefore focus on two different things: the village’s architecture, religious buildings and cultural history, or a hike as well, with its length and duration clearly specified. The festival dates and the estimated duration of the PR7 provide concrete points of reference if you want to plan your stay around them.
