A trip to Vila De Rei can focus on a range of themes: rural ways of life, historic churches, viewpoints, hiking trails and regional cuisine. When looking for a hotel, it can help to decide first what matters most to you: would you like to focus mainly on the town’s history and traditions, or would you rather explore viewpoints and trails?

Museums, churches and craft traditions

The Museu Municipal is housed in one of Vila De Rei’s oldest buildings. It recreates the way of life of a wealthy farming family between the 19th and 20th centuries. The rural activities and occupations on display include winemaking, pig slaughter, shoemaking, blacksmithing, beekeeping, pottery and resin extraction. The examples range from making and processing different materials to activities associated with farming and everyday life.

The Sala da Cadeia, in the Núcleo Museológico da Antiga Cadeia de Vila de Rei, complements the Museu Municipal. Another cultural and historical landmark is the Antiga Igreja Matriz, also known as Igreja de Santa Maria: it is thought to have been built during the reign of Saint Isabel in the 13th or 14th century. Archaeological finds in the church grounds contribute to its historical and heritage significance for the Concelho de Vila de Rei. The Igreja da Misericórdia is located in the oldest urban settlement area.

The Museu da Escola da Fundada also explores a distinct part of the area’s history. It is housed in a former primary school building constructed in 1960. At Picoto da Melriça, next to which the Museu da Geodesia is located in the Centro Geodésico de Portugal, the focus is instead on the development of Portuguese geodesy. The museum preserves a related historical and scientific heritage and is described as unique in Portugal.

Beyond the museums, basket weaving, weaving, decorative arts, beekeeping, creative sewing and embroidery are among Vila De Rei’s craft traditions. Together with the occupations featured in the Museu Municipal, these subjects offer different insights into local skills and rural life.

Viewpoints and trails

The Rota dos Miradouros includes nine viewpoints spread across the Concelho. They include the Miradouro do Centro Geodésico and the Miradouro do Penedo Furado. Nearby, the Centro Geodésico de Portugal at Picoto da Melriça offers 360-degree views across a wide horizon, including the Serra da Lousã and, on a clear day, the Serra da Estrela. By car, head from the centre of Vila de Rei towards Sertã: after 1.8 kilometres, you will reach a signposted turn-off for Picoto da Melriça; from there, it is another 900 metres.

The hiking trails differ in their route type and layout. The Trilho das Bufareiras is a linear Pequena Rota hiking trail between Vila De Rei and Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado. It follows the Ribeira do Pisão and passes through Pisão Cimeiro. The Passadiços do Penedo Furado, by contrast, form an approximately two-kilometre circular route; Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado is recommended as the starting point. The boardwalks run along the Ribeira do Codes.

The Miradouro de Fernandaires offers another kind of scenery, with views of the Castelo de Bode reservoir, the village and Praia Fluvial de Fernandaires. The site has viewing platforms, picnic tables and parking. The river beach features a large pool fed by the Castelo de Bode reservoir, as well as a municipal mooring for recreational and maritime tourism boats. If you plan to use the mooring, confirm reservations and operating conditions before your trip.

Praia do Bostelim lies between Fundada and São João do Peso in a natural setting characterised by high biodiversity. The landscapes of the Concelho therefore offer contrasting experiences: views of a reservoir and village, a wide horizon at the Centro Geodésico, and the natural surroundings of Bostelim.

Regional cuisine as another focus

Local dishes include Sopa de Peixe, Bacalhau à Vila de Rei and Bacalhau à Cobra. These add a culinary dimension to the cultural and landscape highlights. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would like to discover Vila De Rei mainly through its museums and historic sites, its viewpoints and hiking trails, or its regional cuisine as well.
