In Kovylkinsky District, extensive pine forests sit alongside smaller natural monuments, springs and places of cultural and historical interest. The contrast between Sosnovy Les, covering 613 hectares, and the much smaller Linev Kordon, at just 4.4 hectares, is especially striking. The Keredeshi spring, a house museum in Kochelaevo, and historic churches and manor buildings add further points of interest. The selection ranges from botanical protected areas to local history.

Pine Forests and Botanical Natural Monuments

Sosnovy Les is a 613-hectare botanical natural monument near the “Moksha” sanatorium and was designated in 1979. Complex pine stands account for 90 percent of the area; the remaining 10 percent consists of birch, pine and spruce plantings. The natural monument was established to serve the recreational and health needs of the residents of Kovylkino and the Republic of Mordovia as a whole.

Linev Kordon is also a botanical natural monument and was designated in 1979. At 4.4 hectares, it is considerably smaller than Sosnovy Les; its defining feature is mature pine forest. The comparison highlights two different scales: a larger area with several types of woodland, and a smaller natural monument distinguished by its mature pine forest.

Another nature conservation site covers 200 hectares of pine forest and aims to preserve wild medicinal plants, particularly common St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L.). Alongside the forest areas, the plant life is also protected. For visitors interested in nature, the themes of forest composition and native medicinal plants complement one another.

Springs and Built Features

The Keredeshi spring is in the centre of Staroye Drakino. It is considered to have cultural and aesthetic significance. A wooden bathing facility and a low fence have been built at the spring. Both the natural setting and the built features are part of what makes this place distinctive.

The Rodnik Chasovnya natural monument includes a small wooden chapel and a bathing facility; the spring is covered and edged with stone. These features distinguish it from Keredeshi, where a low fence is noted alongside the bathing facility. Check the current condition of the facilities at both spring sites before visiting.

Art and Local History

The F. V. Sychkov House Museum in Kochelaevo displays personal belongings of the artist and his wife, as well as 16 copies of his works in the artist’s workshop. The personal items and reproductions of his works offer different perspectives on the artist and his work.

Local themes also include architectural history: only the “winter section” remains of the cemetery church in Kochelaevo, dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring.” The former Arapov family estate includes buildings dating from the 19th century. The museum, church and manor thus offer different ways to explore the history of art and the area.

Further Natural Context: Republic of Mordovia

The “Smolny” National Park in the Republic of Mordovia was established on March 7, 1995. Its purpose is to protect especially valuable natural complexes in the republic’s coniferous-deciduous mixed forest zone. The 1.5-kilometre “Forest Work” ecological trail passes through pine and broadleaf forest and provides information about forest conservation and reforestation. The trail is accessible only during the warm season.
